Disney California Adventure is hitting its 25th anniversary on February 8, 2026, and if you know anything about this park's history, you know it was absolutely trashed when it first opened in 2001. Guests hated it. Critics destroyed it. It was basically the most embarrassing thing Disney had ever created, and they spent billions over the years trying to fix their mistakes. Now they're celebrating 25 years by bringing back Soarin' Over California, and honestly, this is exactly what fans have been begging for.
Soarin' Over California Is Back
The original Soarin' Over California returns for a limited run from February 6 through July 1, 2026. This was one of the park's opening day attractions back in 2001 and honestly one of the only things that didn't suck when California Adventure first opened.
The attraction takes you on this virtual tour of California landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Yosemite National Park, Palm Springs, and downtown Los Angeles, with this incredible musical score. Disney replaced it with Soarin' Around the World in 2016 to match EPCOT's version, but fans have been complaining about that decision ever since and demanding the California version come back.
On July 2, they're debuting Soarin' Across America for America's 250th anniversary, so you've got this limited window to experience the original California version before it potentially disappears again.
The Anniversary Food and Disney Merch
Schmoozies is serving a cake shake from February 6-15 with strawberry icing, sprinkles, whipped topping, and an actual slice of cake. It's basically diabetes in a cup, but it looks incredible.
The Pixar Pal-A-Round Bucket is the big anniversary novelty item, and it's actually pretty cool. It's modeled after that giant Ferris wheel and features “Magic Inside” technology that reacts to different locations in both parks, changing colors and lighting patterns. The effects are said to enhance storytelling in some lands and amplify nighttime spectaculars.
You can get it starting February 6 while supplies last through mobile order at Hollywood Lounge and Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta from February 6-8, then at Fairfax Market, Mortimers Market, and various popcorn carts.
The 25th Anniversary Collection has apparel and three collectible pins available at Elias & Co., Gone Hollywood, and Seaside Souvenirs. The artwork features park icons like the Carthay Circle tower, Pixar Pal-A-Round, and Grizzly Peak.
On February 8, guests entering the park with valid tickets can get free commemorative maps while supplies last, which will probably disappear in like two hours, knowing how these things go.
Mickey and Minnie Get New Outfits
Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are getting new anniversary outfits on Buena Vista Street starting February 6. The costumes have sun motifs and vibrant colors referencing when the park first opened with all those golden possibility themes that didn't really work out initially.
Grand Californian Hotel Stuff
Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is also celebrating 25 years since it was the first Disney hotel located inside a theme park. Humphrey the Bear is making his first ever Disney Parks appearance at Storytellers Cafe starting February 6 during Donald's Tales of Adventure dinner buffet.
Humphrey is this mischievous grizzly bear from Disney animated shorts who inspired Humphrey's Service & Supplies at California Adventure. There's also a limited edition anniversary pin with Chip ‘n' Dale available at Acorns Gifts & Goods.
Why This Disney Park's Anniversary Actually Matters
Disney California Adventure opened February 8, 2001 as the youngest Disney park in America, coming way after Disneyland in 1955, Magic Kingdom in 1971, EPCOT in 1982, Hollywood Studios in 1989, and Animal Kingdom in 1998.
The original park was absolutely brutal. It felt cheap, uninspired, and completely lacking the Disney magic people expected. It was basically a glorified state fair celebrating California with budget attractions that disappointed everyone who paid premium Disney prices.
Disney spent billions over the years completely reimagining it with Cars Land, Buena Vista Street replacing the terrible entrance plaza, Pixar Pier, Avengers Campus, and San Fransokyo Square. These additions finally gave the park a legitimate identity and actual attractions worth experiencing instead of the placeholder garbage from 2001.
