Netflix’s upcoming animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 has reignited debate among fans, with a new theory suggesting the show might secretly be a Dungeons & Dragons campaign rather than a direct extension of the main storyline.

The upcoming 3D animated series takes place between seasons 2 and 3 and brings back the core Hawkins group for another supernatural mystery. However, questions about continuity surfaced long before the trailer's recent online premiere, with viewers wondering how such major events could occur without being referenced in later seasons.
One line from the trailer has fueled speculation in particular. Mike Wheeler says, “The big snowstorm is coming next week — that's when we'll start the campaign.” The comment has led some fans to believe the entire series could be nothing more than a tabletop campaign, potentially allowing the story to exist without affecting established canon.

A Theory Rooted In Fan Speculation
Online discussions have quickly embraced the idea. One Reddit user wrote, “I have little faith [in Tales From ’85], but I think it will be fun. That's what I'm going for. Heard them say it's supposed to be canon, but I'm going to view as it isn't. If it turns out to be a dream or a D&D campaign and not real, even better.”
Another fan suggested the concept could serve as a compromise, writing, “I think that Tales From ’85 will adapt the ‘it was all a campaign’ theory, and that is how they will fit it into the story without messing up anything in seasons 3-5.”

Season 5 Fallout Still Shapes Fan Reactions
The renewed speculation follows a turbulent response to Stranger Things Season 5, which premiered its finale, “The Rightside Up,” on December 31.
The episode sparked the viral “Conformity Gate” theory, which claimed the epilogue set 18 months after Vecna’s defeat was a fabricated reality.
Some viewers believed Netflix planned to release a second, hidden ending. When that didn’t happen, attention shifted to One Last Adventure, a behind-the-scenes documentary released January 12. But that turned out to be just as promised and nothing more.
The divisive response extended far beyond theories. A fan petition demanding an extended cut of Season 5 collected hundreds of thousands of signatures, reflecting a huge amount of dissatisfaction with the show’s conclusion.

Creative Team Points To New Story Possibilities
With all that said, showrunner Eric Robles has addressed how Tales From ’85 fits into the timeline, explaining how the team developed new threats while respecting existing lore.
“I dissected the [main live-action] show, looking for any loopholes,” Robles told Entertainment Weekly last year. “What is this big idea? Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter. There’s a chain reaction to the creatures that are in our world and the things that are popping up.”
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 premieres April 23 on Netflix.
