Magic Kingdom has always balanced nostalgia with reinvention. While some attractions remain nearly unchanged for decades, others eventually give way to new ideas as Disney continues evolving its parks.
That process is now playing out in a major way inside Frontierland.
As we already knew was happening, one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognizable features—the Rivers of America—is officially being replaced. Construction crews have now begun pouring concrete over sections of the drained riverbed, signaling that the transformation of this area is moving into its next phase.
For longtime fans, it marks the end of one of the park’s most beloved landmarks.
The End of the Rivers of America
For years, the Rivers of America served as the scenic heart of Frontierland.
The winding waterway wrapped around Tom Sawyer Island and provided the route for the Liberty Square Riverboat, creating a peaceful escape from the busy energy of Magic Kingdom’s main walkways.
Guests could watch the riverboat glide past, explore the island’s caves and bridges, or simply relax along the wooden boardwalk while enjoying the view.
It was one of the park’s most atmospheric settings.
But the river that once defined this area has now disappeared.
Disney drained the waterway as part of a major expansion project, and recent construction activity confirms that large sections of the riverbed are now being covered with concrete as work accelerates.
A Permanent Change to Frontierland
Seeing the water drained was already emotional for many fans, but the addition of concrete makes it clear that the river is not coming back.
Construction crews have begun filling portions of the former river area with concrete foundations, preparing the land for new structures, pathways, and themed elements that will eventually replace the old environment.
Heavy equipment and concrete trucks have been spotted working inside the construction zone as the project continues to move forward.
Once these foundations are complete, the physical footprint of the former river will be permanently altered.
That moment represents one of the most dramatic changes Frontierland has ever experienced.
The Park’s Landscape Is Already Changing
Even from the guest areas of Magic Kingdom, it’s clear the transformation is well underway.
Construction walls now block large portions of Frontierland where the river once flowed. Guests walking through the land can no longer see the wide waterway that previously separated the boardwalk from Tom Sawyer Island.
Instead, the area is now part of one of Disney’s most ambitious construction projects in years.
Nearby locations around the Frontierland boardwalk are also expected to close permanently as work expands deeper into the land, allowing Disney to continue building the new environments planned for this section of the park.
What Will Replace the River
While the loss of the Rivers of America marks the end of a classic Magic Kingdom experience, Disney is preparing to introduce several major additions in its place.
The first new development will be Piston Peak National Park, a land inspired by the world of Cars. The area will bring guests into a national park environment connected to the stories and characters from the Cars universe.
Beyond that, Disney is planning something even bigger.
A brand-new Disney Villains land is currently in development, and reports suggest the project is being expanded into a larger and more elaborate experience than originally planned.
If those plans come together as expected, the land could become one of Magic Kingdom’s most ambitious themed areas ever built.
Meanwhile, another major attraction in the area is also receiving updates.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently undergoing a reimagining as part of the broader Frontierland overhaul. The attraction is expected to reopen once its updates are complete, though Disney has not yet announced a timeline.
Frontierland Is Entering a New Era
Magic Kingdom has always found ways to evolve while keeping its sense of history alive.
But sometimes change arrives in a way that feels especially significant.
The Rivers of America helped define Frontierland for generations of guests. It created space, atmosphere, and storytelling that made the land feel like a journey into the past.
Now, with concrete covering sections of the former riverbed, the park is clearly stepping into a new chapter.
When construction is finished, Frontierland will no longer look the way guests remember it.
Instead, a completely new landscape will rise where the river once flowed—one designed to carry Magic Kingdom into its next era.
