REPORT: Magic Kingdom Overhaul Starts Soon, Classic Features on the Chopping Block

Magic Kingdom is about to undergo a dramatic transformation, with the countdown ticking to a new chapter in its long history. In just two weeks, Disney is preparing to kick off a massive redevelopment project that will reshape one of the park's most iconic areas.

Walt Disney World Resort’s flagship park is on the brink of two major additions—Villains Land and Cars Land—along with a shiny new nighttime parade, Disney Starlight, debuting later this summer. While the parade is set to light up Main Street, U.S.A. sooner rather than later, the immersive lands will take a bit longer to materialize.

But before either of those expansions can take shape, Disney has to remove a few elements that have been part of the park for decades.

The Rivers of America—an iconic, scenic feature since 1971—will be drained and repurposed to make space for both new lands. The move has sparked heated debates among Disney fans, many of whom view the river as one of the park's last remaining signature features that sets Magic Kingdom apart from any other theme park.

The process of getting approval for this controversial modification has been anything but smooth. In 2024, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) issued a Request for More Information (RAI), demanding more details about stormwater modifications before issuing the necessary permits. Disney later asked for an extension to address the concerns raised.

Even so, the clock is ticking, and a recent construction bid posted online suggests the start of major work could begin as soon as March 1 (via Blog Mickey).

According to the listing, preparations for Magic Kingdom's transformation are set to begin in just two weeks. While the official announcement hasn't yet confirmed a closure date for the Rivers of America or Tom Sawyer Island, the early stages of the work will likely take place behind the scenes, with large swaths of forested areas northwest of the park set to be cleared as part of the development.

Interestingly, the construction bid is labeled “Disney Magic Kingdom Expansion – Villains Land,” leaving the highly anticipated Cars Land unmentioned. The details outlined in the bid confirm that Villains Land will include a roller coaster and an indoor ride, effectively dispelling earlier rumors that the area would feature multiple coasters.

Hype Grows For Disney's Villains Land

This all aligns with the buzz surrounding Villains Land, one of the most anticipated additions to Walt Disney World in years. Josh D'Amaro, Chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, teased in November 2024 that the work would begin “very, very soon.” For years, Disney fans have speculated about the possibility of a Disney Villains area, with some even envisioning an entire park dedicated to the franchise’s most nefarious characters.

When the land opens, it will feature 13 of Disney’s most iconic villains, each with their own area where they’ll weave their dark tales. “Their evil ambitions give us endless possibilities to tell new stories,” D'Amaro said, showcasing portraits of some of the most memorable antagonists: the Queen of Hearts, Jafar, Lady Tremaine, Yzma, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, Gaston, Mother Gothel, Ursula, Hades, Chernabog, the Evil Queen, and Maleficent.

“In our story, a mysterious spell has been cast, summoning villains from every realm,” D'Amaro continued. “In this land, heroes don't come to save the day — and there may not be a happily ever after!”

As the clock ticks down to the start of construction, the excitement around the two new lands and their potential to redefine the Magic Kingdom experience only grows.

Which expansion are you more excited for—Cars Land's high-speed thrills or the dark allure of Disney Villains Land?
