Disney Imagineer Shares Thoughts on Villains Land Expansion

Villains Land Disney World Expansion

The future of Disney Parks appears to include bold plans of expansion, and one “blue sky” project appears to have more than just fans wishing that it come true.

At the D23 Expo last September, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, Josh D’Amaro revealed what Walt Disney Imagineers call “Blue Sky” plans designed for possible expansion of Walt Disney World Resort Theme Parks like Magic Kingdom. One of the ideas teased a permanent Disney Villains-themed land built in what would be the new farthest corner of Magic Kingdom Park behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

While he emphasized that the initial concept brought forward was simply the dreams of his teammates, Walt Disney Imagineer Chris Beatty revealed that Disney fans’ emphatic reaction to the possibility of a Villains’ land in a Disney Park piqued the magic markers’ interest in the idea.

“We’re dreaming every day about what could be next at Walt Disney World. We just wanted to give you a peek at some of the amazing things that could be coming. It’s changing every day. It’s exciting. I think Josh was really trying to get across that spirit of creativity, of what could be next, of innovation, of the possibility of what could be is still alive and well at Disney and Imagineering,” he says of the D23 presentation, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly over the opening of TRON: Lightcycle/Run

“[The villains concept] got pretty good applause,” he added. “We took note of how loud the applause was when we announced that.”

It should be noted though that no concrete plans are yet underway for any such expansion of Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Instead, the Disney World-centric camps of Walt Disney Imagineering remain focused on the completion of TRON: Lightcycle/Run in Tomorrowland, and the ongoing transformation of Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

We at Disney Fanatic will continue to closely monitor these possibilities, though, and will update our readers once more details come to light.
