Goodbye, Old West: Disney World Continues Frontierland Demolition

Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom is in the midst of one of its most dramatic transformations yet. As Frontierland continues to undergo extensive renovations, several classic attractions and experiences are being reimagined to fit into Disney’s evolving vision for the original Central Florida park. As part of the overhaul, Disney is bringing one “Old West” icon, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, into the future.

Walt Disney Imagineers are currently performing the longest-ever refurbishment of the Frontierland roller coaster, which began in January and is expected to last until early 2026. This long-awaited update promises to bring some “new magic” to this beloved attraction.

Although Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t shared many details about the changes coming to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, rumors have been circulating for months. The arrival of large cranes in Frontierland earlier this year sparked speculation that track refurbishments were underway. Those rumors were confirmed when Disney guests noticed fresh steel tracks being delivered to the park on flatbeds:

According to the most recent report from WDWNT, crews are currently finishing the track replacement on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s second lift hill. Construction workers and equipment have also been spotted in the ride’s queue.

While Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is being updated, other elements of Frontierland are undergoing equally significant transformations. The original Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade has already been replaced with a Disney Vacation Club lounge, and Splash Mountain was reimagined into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, inspired by the hit movie The Princess and the Frog (2009).

The changes don’t stop there. One of the most significant shifts is the upcoming Cars (2006) themed attractions, which will replace Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. The permanent closure of Tom Sawyer Island, a classic piece of Magic Kingdom Park, will forever change Frontierland’s original landscape.

Future Attractions and the Disney Villains Land

The introduction of a Disney Villains Land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad” is poised to change Magic Kingdom Park’s footprint even further. Though this new land won’t be part of Frontierland, it is expected to draw massive crowds to the area when it opens.

Despite all the construction in Frontierland, the park remains active, and guests can spot Big Thunder Mountain Railroad construction as they ride the Walt Disney World Railroad or the Liberty Square Riverboat.
