‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Could Be Duo’s Final Appearance, Replacements Possible

When The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ in 2019, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu quickly became one of the most recognizable duos in Star Wars. The armored bounty hunter and the small Force-sensitive child—quickly nicknamed “Baby Yoda” by fans—became a cultural phenomenon almost overnight.

For several years, they were the center of the franchise’s modern era. Merchandise dominated store shelves, Grogu became a viral meme machine, and the Disney+ series ran for three seasons between 2019 and 2023.

But the pair no longer command the same cultural attention they once did.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Reactions So Far

Lucasfilm is preparing to bring the characters to theaters in The Mandalorian & Grogu on May 22, 2026, marking the first Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Yet early reactions to the project have been mixed. The first trailer failed to generate significant excitement online, while a Super Bowl advertisement featuring the characters riding in a tauntaun-drawn carriage left many viewers puzzled.

According to Variety, there have also been internal concerns that the spot “failed to generate the kind of excitement the marketing team was hoping to spark.”

Some viewers have also questioned whether the film is arriving too late. The Mandalorian Season 3 ended in 2023 and received mixed to negative reactions from fans, meaning the theatrical continuation is launching three years after the show’s last episode.

If the film struggles at the box office, Lucasfilm may eventually look to shift its attention toward new characters to lead future stories.

One possibility could come from an unlikely corner of the franchise.

Star Wars: Visions Could “Replace” Mando and Grogu

A recent report from insider Daniel Richtman, cited by The Direct, claims that Lucasfilm is developing another season of the anime anthology Star Wars: Visions. The series debuted on Disney+ in 2021 and features short animated stories created by studios around the world.

Among the most popular entries from the first volume was “Lop and Ocho,” which follows a young Lepi named Lop during the reign of the Galactic Empire. The character travels with a hovering droid companion named TD-4.

While the episode has never received a sequel in Volume 3, which included follow-ups to Volume 1 episodes, fans have continued to praise the character’s design and story. If Visions continues expanding its universe even beyond this year's Star Wars Visions: Presents, Lop and TD-4 could emerge as an unexpected duo within the wider franchise.

For now, however, the future of Star Wars in theaters may depend on how audiences respond when Din Djarin and Grogu return to the big screen next year.
