Months Before Disney’s Release, Jeff Bezos’ Amazon Studios Surprises With Its Own “Mandalorian and Grogu” Movie

After years focused on streaming, Star Wars is preparing for a theatrical comeback with The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), though the film arrives amid uncertainty about the franchise’s broader direction.

The movie, set for release on May 22, 2026, reunites audiences with Din Djarin and Grogu, the central figures of The Mandalorian. Since debuting in 2019, the Disney+ series has been instrumental in shaping Star Wars’ television presence, spawning interconnected titles like The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew under the umbrella of the so-called Mando-Verse.

That shared storytelling approach, however, may no longer be as expansive as originally planned. Reports indicate that multiple New Republic-era projects have slowed, with some possibly being reconsidered altogether. Leadership changes at Lucasfilm have further contributed to questions about the long-term roadmap. For now, The Mandalorian and Grogu and Ahsoka Season 2 remain the clearest pieces of that timeline still progressing, while The Mandalorian Season 4 has not been officially confirmed.

Jon Favreau, who directs the film, has made it clear that the project is not simply an extension of the series. Even though Season 4 scripts have been written, the film is intended to stand apart, reflecting a shift toward theatrical storytelling.

The film’s runtime is expected to land at around two hours and 20 minutes, consistent with recent Star Wars entries. Lucasfilm is also reportedly steering away from a festival debut, choosing instead to launch the movie through a more conventional release strategy rather than premiering at Cannes.

As the first Star Wars film since 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker, the stakes are considerable. Favreau co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, crafting a story that places Din Djarin and Grogu alongside the New Republic as they contend with lingering Imperial forces.

Pedro Pascal returns to lead the cast, with Grogu once again brought to life using practical effects. The ensemble also features Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White portraying Rotta the Hutt, and Jonny Coyne reprising his role as an Imperial warlord. With its focus narrowed and its format shifted, the film could redefine how Star Wars balances streaming and theatrical storytelling moving forward.

Yet even as Lucasfilm prepares its return to cinemas, another science-fiction release is already making waves.

Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir’s novel, has quickly established itself as a major box office success following its March 20, 2026, release.

Starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace—a scientist and teacher tasked with saving humanity—the film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard. It has already earned $140.9 million globally, surpassing early projections.

Sandra Hüller co-stars as Eva Stratt, while James Ortiz performs as the alien Rocky through both voice work and puppetry.

“The new release zoomed past Scream 7, this year’s previous biggest seller overall, and also overtook Creed III in having the fastest start for a production by Amazon MGM Studios,” the BBC wrote. “In a statement seen by Variety, Amazon MGM’s distribution boss Kevin Wilson said the novel had given them ‘a powerful foundation’ before the directors ‘created a visually stunning, heart-gripping film'”.

The film’s performance underscores continued demand for ambitious, original science fiction stories. It now stands among the most successful openings for a non-sequel, non-franchise film, alongside Christopher Nolan’s 2023 hit Oppenheimer.

Comparisons between Project Hail Mary and The Mandalorian and Grogu are already emerging. At their core, both films focus on unlikely partnerships between humans and extraterrestrial beings—Gosling’s Grace with Rocky, and Pascal’s Din with Grogu.

The narratives also share a survival-driven structure. In Star Wars, the conflict centers on protecting the New Republic from Imperial remnants. In Project Hail Mary, the stakes are cosmic, as Grace and Rocky attempt to stop Astrophage from extinguishing the Sun.

Character dynamics further connect the two stories. Grogu is expected to display increased independence compared to earlier appearances, while Rocky is portrayed as a capable ally who complements Grace’s mission.

With Project Hail Mary off to a strong start and The Mandalorian and Grogu positioned as a major theatrical return for Star Wars, the comparison between the two films may ultimately reflect shifting audience expectations for the genre.

As 2026 unfolds, both releases highlight a renewed focus on science fiction storytelling at scale—one rooted in an established galaxy far, far away, and the other carving out its own place among modern cinematic contenders.
