Tomorrowland has been missing something for months, and tomorrow that changes in a way every Magic Kingdom regular will notice immediately.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin officially reopens on April 8, 2026, and what is coming back to the park is not a restored version of the attraction that closed. Disney Imagineering spent the refurbishment period rebuilding the experience from the ground up, and the changes go deep enough that guests who rode the original version dozens of times will feel the difference before the ride vehicle makes its first turn.
A soft opening period has been running quietly for the past week. That ends tomorrow. April 8th is the official opening date, and every Magic Kingdom guest gets access starting then.
What Disney Actually Changed
The original Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin operated on a straightforward premise that worked well enough for nearly three decades. Board a spinning vehicle, grab mounted blasters, shoot targets, and compete for the highest score. Simple, replayable, family-friendly, and dependable. The reimagined version keeps that premise and upgrades almost every component that delivered it.
The mounted blasters are gone. In their place are new handheld blasters that can be removed completely from their holders for better aiming throughout the ride. The new blasters feature always-on lasers, updated lighting, new sound effects, and a vibration effect that provides physical feedback with each shot. The ability to detach the blasters entirely gives riders greater freedom of movement than the fixed cannon format ever allowed and changes the competitive dynamic of the attraction considerably for guests who take their score seriously.
NEW: Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will feature a “refreshed” queue when the attraction reopens soon at Magic Kingdom:

“We are kind of reassessing our queue. It’s going to feel refreshed as well,” said Imagineer Kimberly Alison.

The targets throughout the attraction have been replaced with reactive technology that flashes green when a shot connects, giving riders immediate visual confirmation rather than requiring them to watch a scoreboard for delayed feedback. Specific targets, including white-illuminated and flashing ones, offer higher point values to guests who learn the layout across repeat visits, adding a layer of strategy that the original static targets simply could not provide.
The ride vehicles are completely new. Updated colors inspired by Buzz Lightyear and Star Command replace the previous design. Each vehicle now features digital monitors displaying real-time scores and rider rankings throughout the experience. Watching the score update in real time changes the energy of the competitive format. It changes it in ways that waiting until the end of the ride never could.
The most talked about addition is Buddy. A brand-new character created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios specifically for this reimagined attraction, Buddy is a robot serving as Star Command's newest support character. He is guiding riders through a tutorial before the scored portion of the ride begins. The addition gives the attraction a narrative introduction it previously lacked. It also introduces a character that will likely develop a genuine following among frequent guests.

Why Tomorrow Matters for Magic Kingdom
The soft opening, which has been running since late March. This has provided early access to a limited number of guests while keeping things deliberately quiet. The attraction was not listed in My Disney Experience wait times during that period, and Lightning Lane was not available. That operational structure kept the early experience crowd-light and gave Disney's technical team time to work through any remaining calibration before the official debut.
Tomorrow, all of that changes. Lightning Lane availability returns. Wait times go live in the app. The official opening generates the kind of publicity that brings every guest currently in the park to Tomorrowland within hours.
Magic Kingdom is currently operating at Spring Break crowd levels, which means demand for the newly reopened attraction will climb quickly on April 8. Guests who want to ride with manageable wait times should be in Tomorrowland at park opening rather than circling back later in the day.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin has been part of Magic Kingdom since 1998. The version that closed was beloved enough to be genuinely missed during its absence. The version opening tomorrow is better than what was left. Tomorrowland has been waiting for this day for a long time.
Tomorrow is the day. Go early.
