Lucasfilm has reportedly shut down attempts to bring Mara Jade into modern Star Wars canon.
The character has long held a unique place in the franchise’s history. For fans of the Expanded Universe — now branded Star Wars Legends — Mara Jade became one of the most important figures in Luke Skywalker’s post–original trilogy story.

Her absence from Disney-era storytelling has remained a persistent point of frustration for many longtime readers.
The Rise of Mara Jade in the Expanded Universe
Mara Jade debuted in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, the book widely credited with launching the modern Expanded Universe. At the time, the Star Wars galaxy had largely gone quiet following the original trilogy.
Zahn’s trilogy — Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command — reignited interest in the franchise years before the prequel films arrived.
Mara Jade quickly emerged as one of the story’s standout characters.

Originally introduced as the Emperor’s Hand, she served as one of Palpatine’s most trusted agents. The role placed her at the center of the Empire’s intelligence network and made her fiercely loyal to the fallen regime.
Palpatine’s death left Mara with a final telepathic command — kill Luke Skywalker.
The order drove much of her early storyline. Mara blamed Luke for the Emperor’s death and spent years pursuing him, believing she was carrying out the last mission left to her by the Sith ruler.
That vendetta gradually shifted as the two characters crossed paths multiple times.

Over the course of Zahn’s novels and later Expanded Universe stories, Mara transitioned from enemy to uneasy ally and eventually to Jedi Knight. Her relationship with Luke Skywalker evolved alongside that journey.
The two characters eventually married in the Expanded Universe timeline.
The pairing became enormously popular with readers, partly because Luke never received a meaningful romantic storyline in the films themselves. Aside from the now-infamous kiss with Leia — before their sibling relationship was revealed — the Jedi hero remained unattached on screen.
Mara Jade filled that narrative gap for many fans.
Her character continued to play a central role across numerous Star Wars novels throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, appearing in storylines involving the New Republic, the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, and Luke’s efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order.

However, that entire storyline disappeared from official canon after Disney purchased Lucasfilm.
Lucasfilm Rejects the Character’s Return
In 2012, Disney restructured the Star Wars timeline, declaring most Expanded Universe material non-canon. The stories were rebranded under the Star Wars Legends label, effectively wiping decades of novels, comics, and games from the official continuity.
Luke Skywalker’s marriage to Mara Jade was among the most notable casualties.
Fans have continued pushing for the character’s return ever since.
During the Writing the Star Wars Universe panel at MegaCon 2026, author Claudia Gray revealed that attempts to incorporate Mara Jade into canon have repeatedly been rejected by Lucasfilm.

“A couple of times I was like, ‘Really? Really, no Mara Jade?’ And they were like, ‘[Stern voice] Nope,’” Gray revealed during an appearance on the Writing the Star Wars Universe panel at MegaCon 2026 (via PopVerse).
Timothy Zahn confirmed he received the same response.
“I asked them too” – and was also told no.
Even the franchise’s original creator reportedly had reservations about the character.
During a Dragon Con panel in 2024, Zahn said he had heard that George Lucas disliked certain elements of Heir to the Empire, including Mara Jade herself.

Zahn clarified that the criticism never came directly from Lucas, but rather from others within Lucasfilm.
“I had heard later on from other sources that he didn’t like certain things about the book,” Zahn said. “He didn’t like Mara, didn’t like Ysalamiri [creatures with the ability to mute the Force] and such.”
Even so, Zahn suggested that Lucas’ feelings toward the novel may have been more complicated.
The filmmaker reportedly gave copies of Heir to the Empire to Lucasfilm employees as a Christmas gift in 1991, an unusual move if he truly disliked the story.
Lucas is no longer involved in shaping the franchise. However, his influence continues through Lucasfilm’s current leadership.
Dave Filoni, now co-president of Lucasfilm, is widely viewed as Lucas’ creative successor. Filoni recently confirmed that his upcoming series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord incorporates ideas he previously discussed with Lucas.
Despite Lucasfilm’s resistance to Mara Jade, other Expanded Universe concepts have made the jump back into canon.

Grand Admiral Thrawn — also created by Timothy Zahn — was reintroduced in the animated series Star Wars Rebels before appearing in live action in Ahsoka. Several Legends ships, locations, and story elements have similarly resurfaced.
That selective revival has kept speculation alive around Mara Jade.
Rumors circulated in 2025 that Lucasfilm was exploring a Disney+ series centered on the character. Industry insider My Time to Shine Hello (via Comic Book Movie) reported that the project was in development, with speculation that Spider-Man and Challengers (2024) star Zendaya had met with the studio.

Others have floated Brie Larson as a potential contender.
Some fans believe the character could appear within the MandoVerse storyline connecting The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ projects.
Those series take place in the years after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983), the same era where Mara Jade’s Expanded Universe storyline unfolded.
That timeline also follows Luke Skywalker’s efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order.

Lucasfilm has already revisited that period through a de-aged Luke in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
Mark Hamill has suggested that his time playing the character has ended. However, Disney has shown a willingness to recast younger versions of legacy characters — most notably Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo.
Some fans have therefore suggested that Sebastian Stan could convincingly portray Luke Skywalker in his 40s.
For now, however, Lucasfilm appears unwilling to revisit one of the most famous relationships in Star Wars history.
Do you think Disney should bring back Mara Jade?
