Disney has officially started a new construction project at one of the most recognizable attractions in Walt Disney World. Guests visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios are now encountering visible refurbishment work throughout portions of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror queue as Disney moves forward with a fresh round of exterior maintenance.
The attraction itself remains open, and guests can still experience the famous randomized drop ride. But the sudden arrival of scrims, temporary coverings, and construction elements around the queue has immediately changed the look of the attraction’s entrance area.
For many Disney fans, Tower of Terror is more than just another thrill ride. It’s one of the defining landmarks of Walt Disney World itself.
That’s why even relatively minor refurbishment work tends to grab attention quickly.
Disney Starts Visible Refurbishment Work
Construction crews have now wrapped multiple decorative columns located throughout the attraction’s covered outdoor queue. Temporary construction boxes currently surround the bases of several columns, while untouched sections nearby still display the original themed designs guests normally see while entering the ride.
At this point, Disney has not announced a timeline for the refurbishment project or explained exactly how extensive the work may become.
The current setup also does not appear to interfere significantly with guest movement through the attraction. Tower of Terror continues operating normally, and the queue remains accessible.
Still, the project has become instantly noticeable because of how visually important the attraction is to Disney’s Hollywood Studios overall.
Tower of Terror sits at the end of Sunset Boulevard and dominates the skyline of the park. The attraction’s aged Hollywood hotel design intentionally creates an abandoned atmosphere, and the queue itself plays a major role in building suspense before guests even step inside.
Why Disney Regularly Updates Tower of Terror
While some Disney attractions receive large overhauls every few years, Tower of Terror often undergoes smaller maintenance projects designed to preserve its appearance and reliability.
Florida weather can be brutal on outdoor themed structures. Constant sun exposure, rain, humidity, and storms can gradually wear down decorative surfaces, particularly around exterior queue areas that handle thousands of guests daily.
Disney reportedly filed a permit connected to the attraction earlier this year, and many fans believe the current construction project is tied directly to that filing.
Because the ride’s immersive atmosphere depends heavily on visual storytelling, Disney typically avoids allowing visible deterioration to become too obvious.
Everything from the cracked pavement to the weathered columns and overgrown landscaping helps create the illusion that guests are entering a once-luxurious Hollywood hotel abandoned after a supernatural event.
Maintaining that illusion takes constant upkeep.
Construction Could Expand Further
Although the current refurbishment work remains relatively contained, it’s possible Disney could expand the project in phases over time.
Several corners of the queue already feature fully wrapped sections, and additional work zones could eventually require Disney to reroute portions of the outdoor queue temporarily.
That’s fairly standard practice at Walt Disney World. Disney often completes projects in stages to avoid full attraction closures whenever possible.
For guests, that usually means construction stays manageable while operations continue normally.
Still, construction appearing directly inside the queue of one of Disney’s most iconic rides naturally draws attention fast.
Tower of Terror has built a fiercely loyal fanbase since opening in 1994, and many guests consider it one of the greatest attractions Disney Imagineering has ever created.

Even after decades of operation, Tower of Terror continues posting long wait times throughout much of the year. The attraction remains one of the biggest draws at Hollywood Studios alongside Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Slinky Dog Dash.
Its mix of storytelling, practical effects, ride technology, and atmosphere still feels unique compared to many modern attractions.
That’s especially true at night, when Sunset Boulevard lights up and the Hollywood Tower Hotel glows ominously above the park entrance corridor.
For now, guests visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios should prepare to encounter active construction elements around the attraction’s queue area.
