Universal Reveals New $6.7 Billion Theme Park Project Set To Transform Region

Universal’s next major resort just got a lot more real.

The theme park industry is in the middle of an expansion race. Disney has committed $60 billion to its parks, cruise ships, and experiences business over the coming years. Universal, meanwhile, has been rapidly adding new destinations across multiple markets.

The company opened Universal Epic Universe in Orlando in 2025, marking its largest-ever investment in a theme park. The resort expanded Universal Orlando Resort with new lands based on Nintendo, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, and Universal Monsters.

Another project is already nearing completion.

Universal Kids Resort opens in Frisco, Texas, later this year, bringing a smaller-scale, seasonal destination built around family-friendly franchises including Shrek, SpongeBob SquarePants, Minions, and Jurassic World.

Now, Universal has revealed fresh details about what may become one of its most ambitious projects yet.

Universal Confirms Major Spending Plan

On Wednesday, Universal formally unveiled new information about Universal United Kingdom Resort, its upcoming theme park destination in Bedfordshire.

The resort is currently scheduled to open in 2031 and will become the company’s first theme park resort in Europe.

Alongside the project’s official branding, the scale of Universal’s financial commitment has now been made public.

And here's the logo for Universal United Kingdom Resort:

According to the British government, Comcast NBCUniversal will invest more than £5 billion during the resort’s construction. The development is expected to take around five years to build.

An additional £1 billion has been earmarked for the resort’s first decade of operation.

The British government is also contributing £1.3 billion toward infrastructure improvements linked to the project.

Planned upgrades include work on the A421 road network and nearby rail connections intended to support future visitor demand and improve local transportation.

Officials have described the agreement as one of the largest tourism investments ever made in the United Kingdom.

Jobs, Growth, and Future Attractions

Universal and government leaders are placing significant emphasis on the project’s long-term economic impact.

Current estimates suggest the resort will create 28,000 jobs across construction and operations. The development is also projected to generate almost £50 billion in economic benefits by 2055.

Construction activity is expected to ramp up soon, with enabling works already underway.

Universal says more than 100 employees are already working on the project in the United Kingdom. The company has also received expressions of interest from more than 33,000 potential job applicants.

Around 80% of future employees are expected to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding communities.

“This historic partnership is a special moment for our company as we bring our first Universal theme park and resort to Europe,” Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts said in a statement.

“We have a long and proud history in the United Kingdom through Sky and NBCUniversal and look forward to creating a spectacular destination that supports the U.K. creative industries and brings joy to millions for generations to come.”

Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury also marked the announcement during the resort’s groundbreaking ceremony.

“Today marks a significant milestone on our journey to bring Universal United Kingdom Resort, featuring immersive storytelling, thrilling attractions and unparalleled creativity and innovation to the UK,” Woodbury said.

Universal has not announced any attractions, rides, or themed lands for the resort, but that has not stopped speculation.

Rumors have linked the project to franchises including Lord of the Rings, James Bond, and Back to the Future. Reports have also suggested that Harry Potter could ultimately be included, despite earlier claims that the franchise would not feature at the resort.
