A newly announced project at Magic Kingdom may reveal how Disney plans to tackle that challenge in the years ahead.
Carousel of Progress Is Leading the Way
Disney has confirmed that Carousel of Progress will close beginning July 6, 2026, for a major reimagining.
The attraction will continue following its familiar family through different periods of history, but Disney plans to introduce new decades and updated scenes that reflect more modern technological developments.
The project also includes a Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure in the attraction’s opening sequence, a detail that has generated significant excitement among fans.
Rather than replacing the attraction outright, Disney is choosing to build upon its existing foundation. That approach preserves the attraction’s identity while helping it connect with a new generation of visitors.
Interestingly, another Disney classic faces many of the same challenges.
Spaceship Earth Still Defines EPCOT
Few attractions capture the spirit of EPCOT quite like Spaceship Earth.
The attraction takes guests through the evolution of communication, showcasing how people have shared knowledge and ideas throughout history. Its location inside EPCOT’s famous sphere has made it a symbol of both the park and Walt Disney World as a whole.
For decades, the attraction has combined education and entertainment in a way few rides can match.
The core story remains effective today, but the technology featured throughout portions of the attraction no longer feels as groundbreaking as it once did.
That reality creates an interesting dilemma.
The Future Has Already Arrived
Spaceship Earth has always focused on where technology could take humanity.
The problem is that many of those future predictions have already become everyday reality.
Guests now carry smartphones that perform tasks once considered impossible. Artificial intelligence, social media platforms, virtual meetings, and digital collaboration have transformed communication worldwide.
Because of those advancements, some scenes inside Spaceship Earth now feel more historical than futuristic.

Could Disney Apply the Same Formula?

Disney has not announced any plans for a Spaceship Earth refurbishment, but Carousel of Progress demonstrates that large-scale updates to classic attractions remain very much on the table.

Journey Into Imagination With Figment frequently appears on fan wish lists for future enhancements. Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros is another attraction that many guests believe could benefit from modern technology.
Recent advances in Disney animatronics have raised expectations even further. Frozen Ever After showcases just how sophisticated these figures have become, offering smoother and more realistic performances than earlier versions.
Those same improvements could eventually be incorporated into other EPCOT attractions.
A New Era for Disney Classics
Walt Disney World’s transformation extends beyond new rides and new lands. Disney is also examining how classic attractions fit into the parks of tomorrow.
