Universal Is Growing the Entertainment, and the Details Are Raising Eyebrows

Universal does not always flaunt its next move. Sometimes it files a trademark. Sometimes it drains a fountain. Sometimes it posts a casting call that says very little officially and leaves the rest to the imagination of a fan community that has gotten very good at reading between the lines.

This week, it posted a casting call.

Universal Orlando Resort just launched a new audition notice for animated costumed character performers at Epic Universe, and the details inside that posting are generating more conversation than a standard casting announcement typically produces. The reason has everything to do with context.

What the Posting Says

The casting call is seeking part-time performers for all animated costumed character opportunities at Epic Universe. Universal is accepting submissions from candidates in three height ranges: 4 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 3 inches, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches, and 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall. Interested performers must submit a headshot, resume, full-length photo, and audition videos by June 20.

Universal has not named the characters. Universal has not named the location within the park. The posting covers all animated costumed character opportunities, which is either standard casting language or a deliberate choice to leave the scope as wide as possible. Either way it tells you that Universal is actively staffing something at Epic Universe that does not fully exist yet.

The Context That Makes This Significant

Epic Universe opened in May 2025 as one of the most technically impressive theme park projects ever built. The lands work. The attractions push technology in directions that other parks have not matched. The guest response has been strong across almost every dimension of the experience.

Almost every dimension.

Before the park opened to the general public, reports emerged that Universal had made significant cuts to the entertainment planned for Celestial Park, the central hub of Epic Universe, where the park's various themed lands connect through a portal concept. Characters and live musical performers who had been active during Team Member preview events were reportedly removed before opening day, leaving the park's most prominent shared space without the atmospheric storytelling layer specifically designed for it.

Universal had described Celestial Park as putting the park in theme park. The entertainment that was cut before opening was specifically designed to provide narrative context for the entire Epic Universe experience, explaining the portal concept through character interaction and live performance in a way that tied the disparate lands together. The loss of that layer before guests ever arrived was one of the more notable pre-launch developments surrounding the park and it has remained a consistent talking point in every honest assessment of the Epic Universe experience since opening day.

Where the New Characters Might Go

The most immediate speculation following the casting announcement has landed on SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, and for good reason. The height requirements in the posting align closely with the physical specifications for Nintendo characters, and the land is already the most character-focused area in Epic Universe with Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach appearing as fully costumed characters. Additional Nintendo characters joining the roster in that land would be a natural expansion of what is already working.

But the broad language of the posting leaves room for something beyond SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. Character additions to other lands within Epic Universe would expand the guest interaction opportunities across the entire park. And the possibility that some version of the Celestial Park entertainment concept that was cut before opening is being rebuilt and restaffed is one that the fan community is not letting go of quietly.

The Timeline

The submission deadline is June 20, which means this is not a distant planning exercise. Universal is actively staffing something right now, on a timeline that suggests whatever is coming is closer to arrival than most guests realize.

Epic Universe has the foundation. It has the lands, the attractions, and the technical infrastructure to compete with anything Disney has built in the past decade. What it has been building toward since opening day is the layer of character interaction and atmospheric entertainment that transforms a great theme park into a complete one.

A casting call for all animated costumed character opportunities is not a small thing in that context. It is a signal that the build is continuing and the next piece is being hired right now.
