Universal Orlando Quietly Repairs Broken Effects Just in Time for 26-Year-Old Ride’s Reopening

Universal Orlando Resort rarely stands still. New attractions arrive, older experiences disappear, and entire areas can transform over time. Yet one attraction has remained a constant presence for more than a quarter century.

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack recently returned after a scheduled refurbishment, ending a closure that lasted through the first half of June. The reopening has generated excitement among longtime fans, especially those hoping the attraction's most talked-about problems received some attention during the downtime.

A Universal Studios Florida Classic

When MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack opened in 2000, it quickly established itself as one of Universal Studios Florida's signature attractions.

Guests step into the role of Men in Black agents and battle aliens throughout a fast-moving dark ride packed with targets. Every rider receives a blaster and competes to earn the highest score possible before reaching the finale.

That simple concept continues to resonate with guests today. Unlike many attractions that play out the same way every time, this ride encourages repeat visits because riders constantly chase higher scores and bragging rights.

Combined with detailed environments, animatronics, and special effects, the attraction has maintained its popularity for decades.

Notorious Issues Have Frustrated Riders

While guests love the attraction, many also acknowledge its imperfections.

One of the most common complaints involves the scoring system. Riders sometimes report that targets do not seem to register correctly, while others believe certain blasters perform better than others.

The attraction's famous red button bonus has also become part of its legend. Riders know it can unlock additional points and a special spin sequence, but many have experienced moments when the feature did not appear to respond as expected.

The ride's complexity can create additional challenges. With numerous moving parts, sensors, effects, and targets operating simultaneously, occasional downtime has become a familiar part of the experience.

Refurbishment Ends With June 17 Reopening

Universal temporarily closed the attraction at the start of June for routine refurbishment work.

After several weeks behind construction walls, MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack officially welcomed guests back on June 17, 2026.

Universal has not outlined every improvement completed during the closure. However, maintenance projects often include inspections, repairs, cleaning, repainting, and system upgrades intended to improve reliability.

Many guests are especially interested in whether work was performed on the attraction's blasters and sensors. Those elements have generated frequent discussion among dedicated riders for years.

The reopening now allows guests to see whether the experience feels any different.

Other Universal Projects Continue

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack is not the only attraction receiving attention across the resort.

Jurassic Park River Adventure remains under refurbishment, and guests continue seeing changes near the Kung Fu Panda Training Camp area.

The Horror Make-Up Show also remains closed while updates take place.

Meanwhile, one of the largest ongoing transformations is occurring within the former Lost Continent area at Islands of Adventure. Demolition work continues, reshaping sections of the land and signaling major changes ahead.

A Ride That Refuses to Fade Away

More than 26 years after opening, MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack remains one of Universal Studios Florida's most enduring attractions.

Its competitive gameplay and practical effects continue attracting guests who enjoy testing their skills against friends and family.

Whether the recent refurbishment addresses all concerns remains unknown. Still, the attraction is back in operation, and riders can once again aim at aliens while chasing that elusive high score.
