A Theme Park Near Disney Just Gave Pokémon Fans a Reason to Make the Drive

LEGOLAND Florida Resort just made a move that will get the attention of every Pokémon fan within driving distance of Walt Disney World, and the timing of the announcement makes it genuinely interesting.

Starting July 20, LEGOLAND Florida is hosting its annual LEGO Festival, and this year's headliner is a brand new LEGO Pokémon Play Zone that gives guests something no toy store can offer until August. Festival visitors will be among the first people in the world to experience the upcoming LEGO Pokémon SMART Play system before it officially launches at retail, making this one of those rare theme park events with a hook that goes well beyond a seasonal decoration refresh.

The festival runs through August 16, 2026, and is included with regular park admission.

What Makes the LEGO Pokémon Play Zone Different

This is not a display case of upcoming sets or a branded photo opportunity slapped together for a holiday weekend. LEGOLAND has built the LEGO Pokémon Play Zone as a complete, immersive Trainer journey, structured around the mechanics of the new SMART Play system it is debuting at the festival.

Guests enter the LEGO Pokémon Trainer Center and work through a series of themed activity areas, each focused on one of five featured Pokémon. In the Nurture Area, guests build a snack for their chosen Pokémon, then place it on a SMART-enabled activity table to observe how it responds. The experience then moves through interactive training stations, brick-built battle challenges, and hands-on creative building opportunities, culminating in a photo moment with a giant LEGO Pikachu model making its public debut during the festival.

The entire experience is screen-free, which is worth noting given how much of Pokémon's identity is tied to handheld gaming. LEGOLAND is leaning into physical, tactile play as the defining feature of the SMART Play system, positioning it as something distinctly different from the digital Pokémon experience fans already know.

The SMART Play System Is the Real Story Here

LEGO Pokémon is not just a new licensed set dropping in August. The SMART Play platform represents a broader strategic move from the LEGO Group toward making traditional brick-based building more interactive and social without requiring a screen. The system is designed to extend the play experience well beyond the initial construction phase, encouraging movement, creativity, and engagement with other players in ways that a standard set sitting on a shelf does not.

LEGOLAND Florida's festival is one of the first major public showcases of this platform anywhere in the world, which puts the park in an unusual position for a relatively under-the-radar destination sitting 35 miles and about 52 minutes down Interstate 4 from Walt Disney World.

Why This Is Worth Paying Attention To

LEGOLAND Florida does not always register on the radar of families planning Orlando vacations, but the park offers something the bigger resorts generally do not: lower crowds, a younger-skewing attraction lineup, and a more accessible price point. Adding a limited-time Pokémon experience with a genuine worldwide exclusivity angle gives the park a compelling draw for this specific stretch of summer that it has not had in recent memory.

For families already in the Orlando area with Pokémon fans in tow, the math is straightforward. The festival runs through August 16, admission covers the whole event, and the LEGO Pokémon SMART Play experience is not available anywhere else until the sets hit stores next month.
