Carousel of Progress Enters a New Era

Carousel of Progress officially closed on July 6, 2026, to begin an extensive refurbishment. Rather than replacing the attraction, Disney is updating its story while keeping the same family at the center of the experience.
When it reopens, the first act will take place during the summer of 1969 as the family watches the Apollo moon landing. The show will then continue through the 1980s, the early 2000s, and finally the present day, showcasing how technology has changed everyday life.
Guests will also encounter a new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic before entering the theater. Combined with refreshed scenes throughout the attraction, the project marks one of the most ambitious updates Carousel of Progress has received in decades.
Swiss Family Treehouse Receives Visible Work
Adventureland is also seeing construction activity.
Scaffolding and tree-themed scrims now surround parts of the Swiss Family Treehouse, although the attraction remains open while crews complete the project. Guests can still explore the six-story walkthrough without major interruptions.
Everything currently suggests Disney is performing a standard refurbishment to maintain the attraction, but its future continues to generate discussion among fans.
As Disney expands the use of recognizable franchises throughout its parks, some visitors wonder whether the Swiss Family Robinson theme could eventually give way to something newer. Disney has not announced any plans to replace the attraction, but Adventureland remains an area that many fans continue watching closely.
The PeopleMover Has Already Changed
Carousel of Progress isn't the only attraction affected by the refurbishment.
The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover recently dropped its narration referencing Carousel of Progress while the attraction remains closed. Although the adjustment is relatively minor, it immediately caught the attention of frequent visitors familiar with the ride's longtime script.
Once Carousel of Progress returns, Disney could restore the announcement with updated dialogue that better reflects the attraction's revised storyline.
Looking Ahead at Magic Kingdom
Disney's recent approach suggests additional changes could arrive in the years ahead.
Space Mountain continues attracting speculation about a future modernization, whether through updated effects or a larger refurbishment. Country Bear Jamboree has already shown that Disney is comfortable giving classic attractions an entirely different identity instead of making small updates.
Following recent incidents, we wouldn't be surprised to see Disney add seat belts to Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Pirates of the Caribbean. Adventureland also continues fueling rumors about a possible Moana-themed attraction, leading some fans to wonder whether Jungle Cruise could eventually become part of a broader redevelopment. Disney has not announced any plans for those projects.
