Universal Just Fired Its Biggest Shot Yet at Disney’s After Hours Events—and Fans Should Pay Attention

Tickets to Sell out in Record Time

For years, the battle between Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World has played out in broad daylight. New attractions, record-breaking roller coasters, dazzling lands, and billion-dollar expansions have fueled a rivalry that has transformed Central Florida into the theme park capital of the world.

But once the sun goes down, the story has often been different.

Disney has long cultivated a reputation for exclusive nighttime experiences, giving fans another reason to stay late—and spend more—for limited-capacity events that offer shorter waits, unique entertainment, and a more intimate atmosphere. Those evenings have become cherished traditions for many guests, offering a version of the parks that feels almost impossible to experience during regular operating hours.

Now, a surprising shift is unfolding. And for longtime theme park fans, it feels like one of the clearest signs yet that Universal isn't content with simply competing during the day.

Universal Is Finally Letting Epic Universe Shine After Dark

Universal Orlando Resort has officially announced Universal Nights, a brand-new limited-capacity event series coming to Epic Universe this fall.

The exclusive after-hours experience will take place on Saturday, October 3, and Saturday, October 17, running from 9:00 p.m. until midnight. Guests with event tickets will be allowed into Epic Universe as early as 7:00 p.m., giving them time to experience the park before settling in to watch the breathtaking Universal Celestial Goodnight nighttime spectacular.

Once the event officially begins, attendees will enjoy nighttime access to attractions, entertainment, character encounters, and complimentary specialty snacks and beverages throughout the evening.

Tickets go on sale August 13, with prices starting at $179.99 plus tax. Universal says additional event details will be revealed in the coming weeks.

This Feels Like More Than Just Another Ticketed Event

On paper, Universal Nights sounds similar to other premium after-hours offerings across the industry.

In reality, it feels like something much bigger.

Epic Universe wasn't simply designed to expand Universal Orlando's footprint. It was designed to transform after sunset.

Unlike many traditional theme parks that primarily emphasize daytime experiences, Epic Universe leans heavily into dramatic nighttime lighting, glowing architecture, illuminated landscapes, synchronized ride effects, and cinematic vistas that become even more striking once darkness falls.

Every portal, pathway, fountain, and skyline was built with evening presentation in mind.

Fans have already spent months sharing nighttime photos and videos across social media, many arguing that Epic Universe becomes an entirely different park after sunset. Universal appears ready to capitalize on that growing sentiment.

Rather than treating nighttime as the end of the day, Universal is positioning it as the main event.

Disney World Suddenly Has Real Competition After Hours

It would be difficult not to view Universal Nights through the lens of Central Florida's ongoing theme park rivalry.

For years, Walt Disney World has successfully offered premium After Hours events across parks like Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT. Guests have been willing to pay a premium for lower wait times, complimentary snacks, and a less crowded experience.

Universal has certainly hosted special events before—most notably its hugely successful Halloween Horror Nights—but Universal Nights represents something different.

Instead of seasonal scares or intellectual property-driven festivals, this is an opportunity to simply experience Epic Universe in the environment many fans believe it was built for.

That distinction matters.

Disney's After Hours events largely enhance parks that already exist. Universal Nights, meanwhile, showcases a park whose nighttime identity has been part of its DNA from the beginning.

That's an important difference—and one Disney executives are almost certainly watching.

Guests Could Be Experiencing Epic Universe at Its Absolute Best

One of the biggest challenges facing Epic Universe since opening has been demand.

Popular attractions have regularly drawn significant wait times, making it difficult for guests to experience everything the park offers in a single visit. Limited-capacity evenings could dramatically change that equation.

Imagine exploring glowing streets with fewer crowds. Riding major attractions beneath illuminated skylines. Meeting characters without daytime congestion. Watching Celestial Park transition from sunset into a fully lit spectacle before spending three additional hours exploring the park with significantly fewer people around you.

That experience is exactly what many fans have been hoping for since Epic Universe first opened.

The included snacks and beverages add value, but they're unlikely to be the main draw.

Instead, Universal is selling something far more compelling: access to a version of Epic Universe that many guests simply haven't been able to experience.

The Next Chapter in the Theme Park Rivalry May Begin After Sunset

Universal Nights currently consists of just two announced dates.

That alone makes the event feel experimental—but also potentially exclusive.

If demand proves strong, it's easy to imagine additional nights, expanded offerings, or even an annual calendar of premium nighttime experiences centered around Epic Universe. The infrastructure is already there. The atmosphere has already impressed guests. Now Universal is testing just how much demand exists for experiencing the park in a completely different way.

For Disney, the announcement arrives as another reminder that competition in Orlando is evolving faster than ever. The battle is no longer simply about who builds the biggest roller coaster or the newest themed land. It's increasingly about who creates the most memorable overall experience—and who gives guests reasons to keep coming back.

Universal has spent billions creating a park many believe reaches its full potential after dark. With Universal Nights, the company is finally inviting guests to see exactly why. If these first events deliver on that promise, the biggest competition between Disney and Universal may no longer happen under the Florida sun—it could happen beneath a sky filled with lights.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
