Disney World Is Getting a New Boss, and There’s a Twist in His Past

The throne at the Most Magical Place on Earth, Walt Disney World, is about to have a new occupant.

Jeff Vahle, the man who has run Walt Disney World since 2020, is walking away. After 36 years with the company, he's retiring, and on August 3, 2026, the keys to the entire kingdom get handed to Joe Schott.

And who is Joe Schott? Buckle up, because his story is a good one.

From Skipper to Supreme Leader at Disney World

Before the corner office, before the global postings, before any of it, Joe Schott's first Disney job was cracking jokes as a Jungle Cruise skipper at Magic Kingdom.

That's right. The next president of Walt Disney World, the man about to command roughly 80,000 cast members across four theme parks, more than 25 hotels, two water parks, a sports complex, and Disney Springs, started out pointing at the backside of water.

The Orlando-born Schott has spent more than 40 years climbing the Disney ladder since then, and the climb has taken him around the planet. He supported Tokyo Disney Resort through Walt Disney Attractions Japan. He worked on the turnaround of Disneyland Paris as Chief Operating Officer. Then he ran Shanghai Disney Resort for six years, opening the Zootopia land, surpassing 100 million total guests in under a decade, and guiding the resort through the COVID shutdowns.

His latest gig? President of Disney Signature Experiences, the empire that includes Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club, Aulani, and Adventures by Disney. On his watch, the cruise line launched the Disney Destiny and the Disney Adventure, its first ship built for the Asian market.

The Man He's Replacing Set the Bar Sky High

Here's the pressure cooker Schott is stepping into. Jeff Vahle didn't coast through his six years in the big chair. He stacked wins.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. TRON Lightcycle / Run. Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana. The reimagined Test Track. Country Bear Musical Jamboree. Zootopia: Better Zoogether! Two new nighttime spectaculars at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. The Island Tower at the Polynesian. All of it opened under Vahle.

And he's not even leaving the cupboard bare. Billions of dollars in new lands and attractions are already under construction at Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Vahle leaves a legacy. Schott inherits both the momentum and the expectations that come with it.

Why Disney World Fans Are Watching This One Closely

Let's be honest about why this matters. Disney fans have long memories, and they know a leadership change can swing the parks in either direction. The person in this job influences what gets built, how cast members are treated, and what a Disney World vacation actually feels like. When the chair changes, fans hold their breath.

The early read on Schott, though, checks out. Frontline park experience. Three international resorts on the resume, each during a defining era. A cruise division that grew aggressively under his watch. Disney says his focus is supporting cast members, delivering exceptional guest experiences, and building on the investments already reshaping the resort.

The Wild Card

One more thing worth circling on the calendar. The 2026 D23 Expo is only a month away, landing almost immediately after Schott takes office. D23 is where Disney drops its biggest parks announcements, which means the new president could walk in the door and straight into a spotlight full of reveals.

Talk about a first week.

The handoff happens August 3. Vahle exits with one of the strongest runs in the resort's modern history, and a former Jungle Cruise skipper takes command of the largest single-site workplace in America. Whether Schott matches the legacy or blows past it, one thing is certain. All eyes are on the new boss.
