Guests arriving in Frontierland on July 13 found a corner of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad looking noticeably more on-theme. The change happened quietly, without any announcement from Walt Disney World Resort.
The Barn That Blends In Now
WDWNT reported that the vehicle storage and maintenance barn attached to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad had received a themed makeover overnight. Walt Disney World Resort repainted the building in an aged-brown finish, designed to match the weathered, time-worn Western look that gives the rest of Frontierland its character. The garage doors got the same treatment — refinished to look appropriately worn and rustic.
Nothing structural was replaced. The siding and the doors themselves are the same as before — the difference is entirely in the paint.
The barn itself was installed during Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's comprehensive refurbishment, which ran from January 2025 through May 2026. That overhaul was one of the most significant in the coaster's history — a full steel track replacement, updated ride vehicles, refreshed theming throughout the attraction, and the addition of a brand-new Rainbow Caverns scene featuring glimmering stalagmites, reflective ponds, and audio-animatronic bats.
The Land Transforming Around It
The barn repaint is a small finishing touch within a Frontierland that looks dramatically different from where it stood two years ago. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat all closed permanently last year to make way for Piston Peak National Park: a Cars (2006)-inspired addition to Frontierland featuring a family-friendly ride and a rally race thrill ride, both conceived as distinct experiences from anything currently in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park. Walt Disney Imagineers are designing the new land around the visual language of America's national parks, incorporating the surrounding Frontierland landscape and the former waterway's footprint.
Simultaneously, the Haunted Mansion is undergoing an exterior refurbishment as portions of its previously backstage facade are prepared to become visible to guests once Piston Peak National Park opens. And beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Disney Villains land is in active development. Thousands of trees in the area have been cleared, and staging has begun on the long-awaited expansion.
Neither Piston Peak National Park nor the Disney Villains land has a confirmed opening date.
