Disney's Hollywood Studios could be preparing for another notable attraction project, and this time, the work centers on one of Toy Story Land's original rides.
Walt Disney Imagineering has now filed multiple permits connected to Alien Swirling Saucers. While Disney hasn't announced a refurbishment or closure, the latest paperwork adds another piece to a growing puzzle surrounding the eight-year-old attraction.
The biggest question is how Disney plans to complete the work. If the project grows beyond smaller updates that crews can handle after park hours, Alien Swirling Saucers could eventually need to close for a more substantial refurbishment.
Disney Files Another Permit for Alien Swirling Saucers
The latest Notice of Commencement covers signage installation at Alien Swirling Saucers. Design Communications Ltd., a company with a history of working with Walt Disney Imagineering on signage projects around Disney World, is named as the contractor.
A signage project by itself wouldn't necessarily raise many eyebrows. Disney routinely refreshes signs and other visual elements without dramatically changing an attraction.
This permit becomes more interesting because it isn't the only recent filing involving Alien Swirling Saucers.
Imagineering previously filed paperwork involving Icarus Exhibits for set element installation. Disney now has two active permits connected to the attraction, with one involving signage and another involving set elements.
That combination opens the door to a potentially larger refresh.
The Ride Has Been Operating for Eight Years
Alien Swirling Saucers debuted with Toy Story Land in June 2018 and has remained one of the area's three major rides alongside Slinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania!
The attraction puts guests inside toy rocket vehicles controlled by the Little Green Men. The vehicles move back and forth across rotating platforms while music plays throughout the experience.
Eight years isn't particularly old by Disney World standards. Plenty of attractions have operated for decades. However, rides still require periodic refurbishment, and Disney sometimes uses those projects as opportunities to make noticeable changes.
New signage and set elements could fit into that kind of project.
Disney hasn't revealed what those set elements are, and there's currently no confirmation that the ride experience itself will change.
Could Disney Temporarily Close the Ride?
That's where things become more speculative.
Disney has not announced a closure date for Alien Swirling Saucers, nor has the company confirmed that a closure will happen at all.
Some work could potentially happen overnight or in phases while the attraction continues operating during regular park hours. Disney regularly completes projects around active attractions without taking them offline.
However, there comes a point where larger projects become difficult to complete while guests are moving through the area.
If Imagineering needs access to the ride itself, its queue, surrounding scenery, signage, or other guest-facing areas, Disney could determine that temporarily shutting down Alien Swirling Saucers makes more sense.
How long that closure could last would depend entirely on the scope of the project.
A relatively straightforward refresh could take days or weeks. If Disney has something considerably larger planned, the attraction could potentially remain unavailable for an extended period.

The Timing Comes as Toy Story Returns to the Spotlight
Disney's apparent interest in updating the attraction also arrives at an interesting moment for the franchise.
Toy Story 5 (2026) opened in theaters on June 19, putting Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and their friends back in front of audiences.
Disney hasn't connected the permits to Toy Story 5 (2026), so there's no confirmation that characters or elements from the movie will appear inside Alien Swirling Saucers.
Still, Disney has frequently brought newer characters and stories into existing theme park experiences. With permits mentioning both signage and set elements, the possibility of a visual refresh naturally raises questions about what Imagineering might have planned.
Until Disney provides more information, however, any direct connection to the new movie remains speculation.
A Closure Would Put More Pressure on Toy Story Land
Even a temporary Alien Swirling Saucers closure could have a noticeable effect on Toy Story Land.
Unlike some larger areas at Disney World, Toy Story Land has only three rides. Removing Alien Swirling Saucers would temporarily reduce that lineup to Slinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania!
That could push more guests toward the remaining attractions, particularly during crowded periods.
Families with younger children could also feel the loss. Alien Swirling Saucers provides another family-friendly option in a park that includes several attractions aimed at older or taller guests.
An extended closure would therefore affect more than one ride. It could change how crowds move through the entire land.

For now, Alien Swirling Saucers remains open, and guests shouldn't change their vacation plans based solely on permit activity.
But the paperwork is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
