Fans have been crying over the supposed leaked plot of ‘Toy Story 5,’ the upcoming movie of a fan-favorite franchise; however, the more important question to be asking is, is this leaked plot even real?
The Toy Story series has been one of the most beloved franchises from Disney/Pixar since the first movie was released in 1995. The movie follows the story of toy Sheriff Woody, who has to learn how to manage his worry that his owner, Andy, will get bored of him when he gets a new toy named Buzz Lightyear.
The movie was a massive hit in 1995 and has stayed incredibly popular through the years. It was directed by John Lasseter and starred Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, among a larger cast. The Toy Story franchise then grew to include three more movies, two off-shoots about Buzz Lightyear (including one starring Chris Evans called Lightyear), television shows, specials, and so much more.

It’s no surprise, then, that fans have been clamoring for a fifth movie for a long time, and recently, we got an update on whether a Toy Story 5 would even happen.
Is Toy Story 5 Coming Out?
Earlier this year, during the February 8 earnings call for the Walt Disney Company, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that there would be a fifth Toy Story film.
Fans will remember that the fourth film of the Toy Story series (2019) saw Buzz, Woody, Bo Peep, and all of Bonnie’s toys (including a special appearance from a Canadian stunt toy, Duke Caboom, voiced by Keanu Reeves) have a fairly conclusive ending. (Bearing in mind, it was complete enough that many felt the series had reached a proper end.)
At the end of Toy Story 4, Woody decides to stay with Bo Peep, who, after a series of events, is no longer with Bonnie’s family, realizing Bonnie will be fine without him. Buzz feels he should return to be with the other toys, and the Sheriff and the space ranger share a bittersweet goodbye.
However, after Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Toy Story 5, many wondered what could be in the cards.
Fake Plot of Toy Story 5 Leaves Fans in Tears
In anticipation of the movie, many have been speculating about what the next installment of the Toy Story franchise will bring. One outlet, however, took that one step further and created a video montage for the movie, claiming that it featured a “leaked plot.”
The video called the upcoming Toy Story film the “saddest Disney movie ever made,” explaining that the story revolved around all of Andy’s toys. Bonnie has now become too old to play with them, and they’re put into storage. While in storage, the toys discover through an online vlog that their former owner, Andy, has been battling stage 4 cancer and doesn’t have long to live—the toys band together to find Andy before he dies.

Now, it doesn’t take a devoted fan to know that the plot sounds completely unlike Disney and is unlikely to be true. So, who is behind the supposed Toy Story plot leak?
The culprit is none other than the now well-known Mouse Trap News. The site is known for its satirical and humorous posts relating to fake Disney news. Mouse Trap News is clearly meant to be taken in good humor and fun and can be quite entertaining to peruse at times.
While this video, in particular, was certainly satire, it still tugged at our and so many others’ heartstrings. One fan commented, “It’s very obviously fake but DAMN.”
Another agreed, “i know this is fake but man😔.”
Will Toy Story 5 Have Andy?
This said the video does raise some interesting questions. For one, will the upcoming movie feature Andy? Will Buzz Lightyear reunite with Sheriff Woody? What has become of Bo-Peep, Gabby, and the others? Is Keanu Reeves going to make a return as well?
The answer to all of these questions is we simply don’t know yet. Many have speculated that a grown-up Andy, potentially with his own family, will return, but Disney has confirmed little about the movie. We don’t even know when it will be released, though The Direct posits June 13, 2025, is the most likely release date.
Is Tom Hanks Doing Toy Story 5?
This also begs the question: will the irreplaceable Tom Hanks return in the fifth movie?
In an interview with Jace Diehl, Tom Hanks’ brother, Jim Hanks—who has done voice work for Woody in some other projects—seemed to imply he would! When sharing a conversation he had with his brother, he explained,
There’s also word they’re thinking about making more. I don’t know where they’re going to go with it, but those people from Pixar are freaking geniuses, so I’m going to assume it’s going to be something really cool. I remember after four, granted this has changed now, but after four, I was having lunch with Tom, and we were talking about – he thought it was done, he said well, “Woody’s yours now.” “Oh, really? I guess it is, isn’t it? Okay.” Not so much… and he’s back!
This said all of this remains speculation until we get confirmation from Disney! But it’s certainly a lot to look forward to until then.
