Black Panther is officially entering its next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Nearly six years after Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death, Marvel Studios has found a way to move the franchise forward without directly recasting his version of T’Challa. The studio has now chosen the actor who will become Wakanda’s next Black Panther.
And Marvel revealed the news to thousands of fans.
Marvel Makes Its Black Panther Decision Official
David Jonsson has officially joined Black Panther 3 as the adult son of T’Challa, and Marvel has confirmed that he will become the MCU’s new Black Panther.
The announcement came during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige welcomed writer and director Ryan Coogler to the stage, where Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joined them.
Coogler will return to direct the third Black Panther installment after directing and co-writing the previous two movies.
The casting marks an important turn for a franchise that has carefully navigated its future since Boseman died in August 2020 following a private battle with colon cancer.
Marvel chose not to recast Boseman’s T’Challa in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Instead, the story dealt with T’Challa’s death and eventually passed the Black Panther mantle to Shuri.
This time, Marvel is looking toward another generation.
A New Black Panther Is Coming in 2028
Fans also know exactly when the next chapter will begin.
Marvel confirmed Black Panther 3 will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028.
During the Hall H presentation, Coogler introduced Jonsson as the MCU’s new Black Panther. The actor became visibly emotional as the audience welcomed him into the Marvel franchise.
“I want to say thank you so much,” Jonsson said before thanking Coogler and Feige.
Jonsson called joining the Black Panther family a privilege and blessing, but stopped short of revealing what Marvel has planned for his character.
“I don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking,” he said.
While Marvel is keeping the story secret, audiences have already met the character Jonsson will play.
The MCU Already Introduced Its Future Hero
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) ended with a major reveal involving T’Challa and Nakia.
The movie revealed that the two had a young son named Toussaint, whom Nakia had raised away from the pressures surrounding Wakanda’s throne. She then revealed his Wakandan name: T’Challa.
Jonsson will play the adult version of that character in Black Panther 3.
The role gives the actor his biggest franchise opportunity yet.
Jonsson previously played Andy, a malfunctioning synthetic traveling alongside young colonists, in Alien: Romulus (2024). He also portrayed Pete McVries in the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk (2025).
Now, he will become one of the central figures in Wakanda’s next generation.
He won’t be the only notable name involved, either.
Another Major Star Is Expected to Join
Denzel Washington is also expected to appear in Black Panther 3.
Washington previously revealed that Coogler had written a role specifically for him. Marvel has not announced who Washington will play or how his character fits into the story.
The studio also hasn’t shared additional casting announcements or plot details.
For now, Jonsson’s casting and the December 2028 release date provide the clearest picture yet of where the franchise is heading.
Before that happens, however, Marvel has several other major stories to tell.
Marvel Has a Busy Road Ahead
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) is among the biggest MCU projects, ahead of the next Black Panther movie, bringing together another massive cast of Marvel characters.
That will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), which is expected to carry major consequences for the wider MCU.
Marvel is also continuing Vision’s story with VisionQuest, while a Ghost Rider film will bring the supernatural character back to theaters.
With Black Panther 3 not arriving until late 2028, those projects leave plenty of room for Marvel’s universe to develop before Wakanda returns to the big screen.
Wakanda Has Found Its Next Protector
Marvel spent years avoiding a direct replacement for Boseman’s T’Challa, whose impact remains deeply connected to the Black Panther franchise.
The studio is now moving forward without asking another actor to recreate that exact character.
Instead, Jonsson will play his son and continue the T’Challa name as Wakanda enters a new generation.
When Black Panther 3 arrives on December 15, 2028, Marvel will finally introduce audiences to the hero carrying Black Panther into the MCU’s future.
