Marvel fans have been holding onto hope for a while now.
After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), it felt like the next chapter was going to arrive sooner rather than later. Wakanda remains one of the MCU’s most important worlds, and the franchise still carries a level of emotional weight that most Marvel projects simply don’t have.
But now, a new update has surfaced, and it’s not exactly the kind of news fans were waiting for.
In fact, it might be the most frustrating update Wakanda has received yet.
Black Panther’s Impact on Marvel Can’t Be Replaced
It’s hard to overstate how much Black Panther (2018) changed the MCU.
The film didn’t just introduce a new hero. It introduced a world that instantly felt essential. Wakanda wasn’t treated like a side location—it became a significant pillar of Marvel storytelling.
And while Marvel has introduced dozens of characters since then, few have left the kind of mark that Black Panther did.
Then came the devastating loss of Chadwick Boseman.
Wakanda Forever had to carry on without him, and the film became something far more meaningful than a standard sequel. Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa still stands as one of the most impactful performances in Marvel history, and the franchise’s decision to honor him rather than replace him became one of the most emotional choices the studio has ever made.
The film also pushed Shuri (Letitia Wright) into the spotlight, signaling that Wakanda’s story wasn’t finished.

Marvel Is Building Toward Its Next Mega Crossover
At this point, Marvel Studios is no longer in “solo sequel” mode.
The studio is in full build-up mode for its next major event films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Those projects have quickly become the center of Marvel’s entire plan, and they’re pulling in major characters from all across the MCU.
The list of names tied to these films is vast, including Professor X (Patrick Stewart), the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
And when Marvel’s biggest movies start stacking up like this, it becomes harder for everything else to move forward quickly.
That’s exactly where the Black Panther 3 update starts to sting.

The Black Panther 3 Plan Is Reportedly a Long Wait
According to insider Jeff Sneider, Marvel Studios plans to begin filming Black Panther 3 at the beginning of 2027.
The report suggests Marvel wants the movie ready for a February 2028 release date.
If that schedule is accurate, it would mean more than five years between Wakanda Forever and the third installment.
That’s a long gap for any sequel, but for Black Panther, it feels fierce because the franchise still feels like it’s in the middle of its emotional arc.
Marvel’s Sequel Schedule Has Become a Pattern
As frustrating as this delay sounds, Marvel has already been doing this with other franchises.
Long gaps between sequels have become common, especially for films that aren’t tied directly to the Avengers brand.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania took more than four years to arrive after its predecessor.
Captain America: Brave New World has a massive delay compared to the last time audiences got a Captain America sequel in the traditional MCU timeline.
And Spider-Man: Brand New Day is another example of Marvel spacing out sequels much longer than fans were used to during the earlier MCU era.
So while the Black Panther 3 gap feels shocking, it fits the frustrating trend Marvel has already created.

Ryan Coogler’s Schedule May Be a Big Reason
Marvel’s focus on Doomsday and Secret Wars is likely the most significant reason the studio is delaying inevitable sequels.
But Ryan Coogler’s schedule also seems to be playing a significant role.
Coogler has been busy with his vampire film Sinners, and he has more work lined up. He also confirmed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Black Panther 3 is planned after his upcoming X-Files reboot TV series.
So even if Marvel wanted to speed things up, Coogler’s timeline may not allow it.
And Marvel probably doesn’t want to make a Black Panther sequel without the director who helped define the franchise.

What Will Black Panther 3 Explore?
Marvel hasn’t confirmed any plot details yet, but fans have already started building theories around what the movie could focus on.
One of the most common ideas is that the story could eventually shift toward Toussaint (Prince T’Challa II) and the future of Wakanda’s throne. Since the movie may not arrive until 2028, Marvel could realistically age him up enough to set him up as the next major leader.
There’s also speculation that Black Panther 3 could arrive after Secret Wars, placing it in a new era of MCU storytelling. That could mean Wakanda faces larger cosmic threats, and some fans believe the Lion Cult or another villain could be introduced.
Still, none of this is confirmed. It’s all based on speculation and Marvel’s larger direction.

Wakanda’s Story May Be Bigger Than Ever
The delay is frustrating, no doubt.
But it may also suggest Marvel is holding Wakanda back for a major reason. With Shuri connected to the Avengers films, it’s clear Marvel still sees her as a central character in the MCU’s next era.
That means the future of Wakanda could look completely different once those events play out.
So even though fans may hate the idea of waiting until 2028, Black Panther 3 may arrive at a moment when Marvel is ready to redefine the franchise entirely.
For now, fans only have one option:
Wait, and hope Wakanda’s return is worth it.
