Marvel didn't provide many answers once Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached its closing moments, but it certainly gave fans plenty to discuss.
The movie's post-credits scene has quickly become one of its biggest talking points, with viewers trying to decode a strange sequence involving Spider-Man's whereabouts. While Marvel never confirms what the scene actually means, one theory has quickly gained momentum.
For many fans, the ending could be another hint that Tobey Maguire isn't finished with the Marvel Cinematic Universe just yet.
A Small Story Element Becomes Much More Important
One of the movie's recurring themes centers on Ned Leeds and his determination to find Spider-Man.
Even though Doctor Strange's spell erased Peter Parker's identity from everyone's memory, Ned still remembers Spider-Man and wants to thank the hero for saving him and his friends so many times. Without realizing Peter is the person he's searching for, Ned begins looking for the masked hero himself.
The movie also suggests that parts of Ned's erased memories may still exist. His reunion with Peter near the end hints that those memories might slowly be resurfacing.
While studying at MIT, Ned creates a Spider-Tracker app that lets users report Spider-Man sightings. Every time someone submits a report, the app alerts everyone using it. Although the tracker initially feels like a fun running gag, it quietly becomes one of the film's most important pieces of technology.
Marvel Ends the Film With a Mystery
That tracker returns during the movie's post-credits scene.
The sequence appears as a vertical recording from the Spider-Tracker app. It first shows a red Spider-Man icon sitting over New York City before another alert suddenly interrupts the display.
Ned's voice announces, “New Spider-Man sighting, location unknown.”
From there, the map rapidly zooms away from Earth and continues into space. Before long, a brief visual glitch flashes across the screen.
Moments later, another Spider-Man marker appears in the distance, seemingly far beyond Earth itself. Ned then announces, “Location found.”
The sequence ends before Marvel displays its familiar message promising Spider-Man's return, prompting fans to search for possible explanations.
Why Tobey Maguire Keeps Coming Up
One theory has emerged as one of the most widely discussed reactions to the ending.
Many viewers believe the tracker didn't simply locate Spider-Man somewhere else in space. Instead, they think the brief glitch indicates the tracker crossing into another reality before it detects a different Spider-Man.
That interpretation has naturally led many fans back to Tobey Maguire.
The tracker appears to move away from Tom Holland's Peter Parker before identifying another Spider-Man somewhere impossibly far away. Because Marvel never says which Spider-Man will return, some viewers believe that decision was intentional.
Recent MCU movies have closed by teasing future appearances from characters including the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, Thor, and Star-Lord. Fans now wonder whether Marvel purposely left Spider-Man's identity open-ended because revealing it now would spoil plans connected to Avengers: Doomsday.
Production Rumors Continue to Fuel the Conversation
Speculation surrounding Maguire has also continued amid reports related to Avengers: Doomsday.
Some fans claimed they spotted Tobey Maguire in London while Marvel was filming the upcoming crossover movie. Those reports have never received official confirmation, and Marvel still hasn't announced Maguire as part of the cast.
Even so, fans know Marvel has kept major surprises hidden before. Both Maguire and Andrew Garfield remained secret additions to Spider-Man: No Way Home until audiences finally watched the movie.
That history makes it easier for fans to believe another surprise return could still happen.
The Ending Could Mean Something Completely Different
As exciting as the Tobey Maguire theory may be, it isn't the only possibility.
The tracker could simply be pointing toward Tom Holland's own future. If Peter Parker heads into space during Avengers: Doomsday or another Spider-Man story, the ending would make perfect sense without introducing another Spider-Man at all.
Other viewers have suggested almost the opposite idea. Instead of tracking another Spider-Man entering the MCU, perhaps the app is following Holland's Peter as he travels into another universe himself.
That possibility has even sparked theories involving Miles Morales. Although Marvel hasn't announced when Miles will appear in live-action, some fans believe another reality could provide the perfect opportunity for Peter to finally meet him.
Marvel Has Plenty of Options Moving Forward
Marvel intentionally leaves the ending open to interpretation, allowing fans to form theories as they wait for the next chapter.
Whether the tracker ultimately leads to Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland, another version of Spider-Man, or something entirely unexpected, the post-credits scene accomplishes exactly what Marvel hoped. It leaves audiences talking long after the movie ends and creates even more anticipation for what comes next in the MCU.
