SeaWorld just broke a rule it kept for a quarter century, and Halloween fans noticed immediately.
Here is the context, because it matters.
Look, Orlando does Halloween better than anywhere, and this is the stretch where you feel it. The announcements start rolling in waves. Universal drops Halloween Horror Nights house lineups. Disney posts Mickey's Not-So-Scary showtimes. The smaller haunts start teasing. If you build a fall trip around any of this, late July is when the season stops being a vibe and becomes a spreadsheet.
Every event has its lane. Horror Nights runs heavy on licensed properties, usually featuring four IP houses alongside the originals. Disney plays it family-friendly with trick-or-treating and villains. And Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld has always been the one that did neither.
For more than 25 years, Howl-O-Scream ran entirely on original monsters, original stories, and original houses. Zero licensed franchises. No familiar movie title on the marquee. Just whatever the entertainment teams dreamed up, usually working with less money than the industry heavyweights.
That ends this fall.
What Is Coming To Holw-O-Scream
SeaWorld is bringing in I Know What You Did Last Summer, one of the first licensed horror franchises ever to hit Howl-O-Scream.
SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Diego, and SeaWorld San Antonio all open the house September 11.
Official title: I Know What You Did Last Summer: The Final Catch. Based on Sony Pictures' original 1997 slasher.
Guests walk through recreations of scenes around the Southport massacre, trailing the group of friends whose cover-up of a deadly accident puts them in the crosshairs of the hook-wielding Fisherman. SeaWorld says this is the first time the film has ever been adapted for a major Halloween event.
United Parks & Resorts CEO Marc Swanson weighed in on the news.
“We're always looking for new ways to raise the bar on immersive entertainment, and bringing ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer‘ to our Howl-O-Scream events is an exciting milestone for all three SeaWorld parks,” Swanson said.
This Is Not Just a New House
Tempting to file this under “new maze announced.” Do not.
This is the end of Howl-O-Scream as an event built entirely on original and public-domain horror.
That independence was the whole point. The teams built their own monsters, their own icons, their own genuinely bizarre worlds. There was a scrappy quality to it that let creativity run the show. No licensing checks to write, no studio approvals to chase, so the weirder idea could actually win.
SeaWorld Orlando's new dark romance scare zone is exactly that energy, and it is the kind of thing that made this event feel like nobody else's.
Busch Gardens Is Getting Hit Too
And it is not just the slasher.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Busch Gardens Williamsburg are each adding separate houses inspired by Anaconda.
That split is interesting because Howl-O-Scream actually started at the Busch Gardens parks before it spread across the SeaWorld portfolio. Now the three SeaWorld parks get the Fisherman, and the two Busch Gardens parks get the snake.
Do the math. Sony Pictures franchises at all five U.S. Howl-O-Scream events in the very first year licensed horror enters the brand. Nobody is dipping a toe here. This is a full company pivot.
What Has Fans Nervous
Nobody is claiming the Fisherman is a weak villain. A hook, a coastline, a body count. That translates to a haunted house just fine.
The nerves are about year three. Year five.
Licensed franchises move tickets, which is exactly why the big players lean on them. But every slot handed to IP is a slot that wouldn't otherwise go to an original concept, and the originals are what gave Howl-O-Scream its personality in the first place. This event never needed a recognizable title to build a house that people talked about all year.
SeaWorld has not said originals are going anywhere. Every event still has original houses, scare zones, entertainment, and themed bars on the lineup.
But 25 uninterrupted years just ended. The hope is these franchises add to the homegrown weirdness instead of quietly eating it.
Know Before You Go To Howl-O-Scream
The new houses open on September 11 at all three SeaWorld parks.
Ticketing is not the same everywhere, which catches people out. Howl-O-Scream is separately ticketed in Orlando and San Diego. San Antonio includes it with regular park admission.
Already planning an Orlando Halloween run with Horror Nights and Not-So-Scary on the list? Howl-O-Scream has historically been the value pick of the three, and adding one licensed house does not move that.
The Question Nobody Can Answer Yet
It is not whether this house is any good.
It is how it plays next to the originals. Howl-O-Scream spent 25 years proving you can build a killer Halloween event without borrowing anybody's characters. Now it finds out what happens when it tries both.
Best case, the IP pulls in crowds who wander into the original mazes and become fans. Worst case, the originals start getting crowded out, and longtime guests will clock it fast.
September 11 is when the answer starts.
