Even so, it's a significant moment. Nearly 50 years after one of the saga's biggest heroes first appeared on screen, Lucasfilm has officially cast another actor in the role, adding a fresh name to one of the most iconic characters in science fiction.
Nearly 50 Years as Han Solo
Harrison Ford first introduced audiences to Han Solo in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), helping turn the wisecracking pilot of the Millennium Falcon into one of Hollywood's most beloved characters. His chemistry with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca helped shape the original trilogy and left a lasting impression on generations of moviegoers.
Ford later returned for The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), then reprised the role decades later in Disney's sequel trilogy. His final appearance came in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), closing a journey that stretched across more than 40 years of filmmaking.
Now, 49 years after Han Solo first blasted into theaters, Lucasfilm has once again cast someone to portray the character officially. This latest project doesn't continue Han's story, but it does revisit where it all began.
An Unexpected Casting Choice
The announcement comes from Welsh broadcaster S4C, which revealed that a Welsh-language version of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, will arrive on Christmas Day 2026.
Instead of relying on the original English performances, the production features an entirely new Welsh-language voice cast. Matthew Rhys, known for his work in Widow's Bay, has been chosen to voice Han Solo, making him the newest actor to take on the iconic role in a Lucasfilm production officially.
The announcement naturally sparks curiosity among longtime fans. Harrison Ford's performance has become synonymous with Han Solo, so any new interpretation immediately invites comparisons. Whether Rhys closely follows Ford's delivery or gives the character a fresh personality remains to be seen.
Lucasfilm Has Walked This Road Before
Although the news may surprise some fans, this isn't the first time Lucasfilm has handed Han Solo to another actor.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) introduced Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of the character, exploring Han's life before joining Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. From the moment he accepted the role, Ehrenreich faced the challenge of living up to one of the most famous performances in movie history.
The production itself became just as famous for its behind-the-scenes troubles. A director change during filming led to major reshoots and months of headlines before the movie finally reached theaters.
When it was released, Solo earned roughly $392.9 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing live-action theatrical release in the franchise at the time. Even so, many viewers felt Ehrenreich's performance wasn't responsible for the movie's disappointing financial results. While Lucasfilm never moved forward with another Han Solo project starring Ehrenreich, many fans appreciated his take on the character.
Now Matthew Rhys gets his own opportunity to carry the mantle, although under very different circumstances.
Looking Toward the Future
Han Solo's future remains one of the more intriguing questions within the Star Wars universe.
Lucasfilm has increasingly found ways to bring familiar faces back through modern production techniques. Hayden Christensen's appearances as Anakin Skywalker in Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and Ahsoka (2023) showed that beloved characters can return long after their original stories seemed finished.
That leaves the door open for Harrison Ford as well. While there has been no indication that Lucasfilm plans to bring Han Solo back in a future project, advances in filmmaking continue creating possibilities that once seemed impossible.
For now, though, there are no confirmed plans for another Ford appearance. Instead, the Welsh-language version of Star Wars: A New Hope offers fans a different way to experience one of the franchise's defining adventures.
