One of the newest pieces of EPCOT's massive transformation has spent much of its short life causing headaches.
World Celebration Gardens opened in late 2023, bringing a completely redesigned central area to the park. Among its nighttime features was an elaborate in-ground lighting system designed to illuminate pathways around the gardens.
Less than three years later, Disney may have another major decision to make.
New construction barriers have appeared around the troubled area, and while Disney hasn't announced what's happening, the lighting's long history of problems raises an obvious possibility: Does Disney repair it again, or finally remove it?
Construction Barriers Arrive at EPCOT
Disney has installed rolling construction barriers around roughly half of the central planter in World Celebration Gardens.
The movable walls are covered in greenery and block access to a sizable portion of the area behind Spaceship Earth. Retractable stanchions have also appeared along a nearby path.
Guests can continue using the open portion of the plaza, and the barriers don't completely obstruct views of Spaceship Earth.
What happens next remains a mystery.
There wasn't visible construction equipment or materials in the area when the barriers appeared, leaving Disney's plans unclear.
However, the location has a history that makes the latest closure worth watching.
Problems Started Almost Immediately
The in-ground lighting hasn't exactly enjoyed a smooth run.
Problems emerged not long after World Celebration Gardens opened. Disney spent much of the following year dealing with a lighting system that didn't consistently operate as intended.
By December 2024, Disney finally managed to get the system fully working again.
That didn't last.
By January 2025, lighting strips had started separating from the pavement. Mortar underneath the strips continued deteriorating, eventually allowing sections to pop out of the ground and create a potential tripping hazard.
Disney couldn't simply leave the area alone.
Disney Tried a Temporary Solution
By June 2025, Disney had blocked off a large portion of the planter while crews addressed the deteriorating lighting.
The solution wasn't particularly elegant.
Disney eventually screwed loosened plastic strips directly into the ground as a stopgap measure. It kept the pieces secured, but it didn't necessarily solve the larger issue facing the system.
Now, more than a year later, barriers are back.
Disney hasn't said whether the latest work involves those lights. Still, considering the previous problems in this exact area, another significant repair is certainly possible.
So is something more permanent.
Could Disney Finally Remove the Lights?
At some point, Disney has to determine whether repeatedly repairing the feature remains worthwhile.
The company could choose to rebuild portions of the system and attempt to solve the underlying problems once and for all. That would preserve a nighttime element created specifically for EPCOT's redesigned center.
Alternatively, Disney could remove the troubled lighting altogether.
There's currently no confirmation that removal is happening, and the barriers alone don't tell us what Disney has planned.
Still, the situation puts an interesting decision in front of Disney.
World Celebration Gardens isn't decades old. The area hasn't even celebrated its third anniversary yet. Permanently removing one of its distinctive design elements this quickly would be notable.
After years of failures and temporary repairs, however, Disney may have to decide just how much more it's willing to invest.
For now, EPCOT's newest barriers are hiding the answer.
