Guests planning a Walt Disney World vacation for 2027 may have two big reasons to keep an eye on the second half of the year.
Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios are both preparing major expansions for 2027. Tropical Americas will bring an 11-acre destination to Animal Kingdom, while Monstropolis will begin its phased debut at Hollywood Studios.
Now, two specific months are emerging as possible opening windows for these massive additions.
Animal Kingdom Is Getting a Major New Land
Tropical Americas will introduce guests to Pueblo Esperanza, a community inspired by South America, Central America, and Mexico.
Nature and exploration will remain central to the experience, but Disney and Pixar stories will also play major roles.
One attraction will send Indiana Jones into an ancient Maya temple in search of a mythical creature. Disney is developing an original adventure specifically for the Animal Kingdom attraction rather than recreating an existing Indiana Jones ride.
Another major experience will draw on Encanto (2021) for inspiration.
That attraction will take guests into the Madrigal family's world, with Antonio and his connection to animals playing an important role in the adventure.
Disney is also building El Carrusel de los Animalitos. The family-friendly carousel will feature 22 hand-carved animals inspired by Disney and Pixar stories.
Pueblo Esperanza will offer more than attractions. A large hacienda will house one of Walt Disney World's largest quick-service restaurants, giving the 11-acre area another major destination for guests.
Disney has committed Tropical Americas to 2027. The exact opening date, however, remains unannounced.
Monstropolis Won't Open All at Once
Hollywood Studios will take a different approach with Monstropolis.
Rather than waiting until every attraction is complete, Disney plans to begin opening portions of the Monsters, Inc.-themed area in 2027 while work continues on its massive suspended-door coaster.
That means the first guests entering Monstropolis won't necessarily see the finished version of the land.
Among the expected early experiences is the Glob Theater.
Mike and Sulley will host “Welcome to Monstropolis,” a new production featuring familiar characters and an original song written by Disney Legend Randy Newman.
The land will also introduce several dining and shopping locations.
Harryhausen's will bring the restaurant from Monsters, Inc. (2001) to Hollywood Studios and feature a sushi chef Audio-Animatronics figure. Archie's Scare Pig Pizza will offer another dining option, while Scareporium will provide a new shopping destination.
The suspended-door coaster will arrive later, as Disney continues to develop Monstropolis beyond its initial 2027 opening.
When Will These Expansions Open?
Disney reaffirmed at D23 that Tropical Americas and the initial portions of Monstropolis are still scheduled for 2027.
What Disney hasn't revealed is exactly when guests can enter them.
Current speculation has September emerging as a possible opening month for Tropical Americas.
That timing could position Animal Kingdom's major expansion just as Walt Disney World moves deeper into its Halloween season and begins looking toward the holidays.
Monstropolis could arrive a couple of months later.
November has emerged as a possible window for Hollywood Studios to begin its phased opening. Disney hasn't confirmed that month either, but the timing could place the new area alongside the park's busy holiday period.
Opening the projects months apart could also give Disney two separate expansion debuts rather than having Tropical Americas and Monstropolis compete for attention at the same time.
For now, both months remain speculative. Construction schedules could change, and Disney could ultimately select completely different opening windows.
When Will Magic Kingdom's New Lands Open?
The development won't stop when Tropical Americas and Monstropolis arrive.
Magic Kingdom is also undergoing major work tied to Piston Peak National Park.
The Cars-themed Frontierland expansion will feature two attractions surrounded by mountains, trails, waterfalls, waterways, and other natural scenery.
Disney hasn't announced when Piston Peak will open. Current expectations point toward 2028 or 2029, but those years remain speculative until Disney establishes an official timeline.
Villains Land will bring another major expansion to Magic Kingdom afterward.
Disney has confirmed plans for two major attractions built around its famous villains. The company hasn't announced an opening year, although current projections increasingly center on 2030.
Those projects could keep major construction moving across Walt Disney World well beyond 2027.
2027 Could End With Two Major Disney Debuts
Disney has already designated 2027 as an important year of expansion.
Animal Kingdom will welcome Tropical Americas, while Hollywood Studios will begin introducing guests to Monstropolis.
Now, the question is whether Disney saves both additions for the latter part of the year.
September could become Tropical Americas' opening window, followed by the first phase of Monstropolis in November. Neither month carries Disney's official confirmation, so guests shouldn't build vacation plans around those dates yet.
But if those potential timelines hold, Disney World could head into the 2027 holiday season with two major new destinations for guests to explore.
