A full day at Walt Disney World can involve almost as much time getting from place to place as it does riding attractions.
That's why Disney's transportation network matters. Buses, boats, and other options help visitors cover a massive resort without constantly returning to their cars. But over the past several months, guests have had more changes to keep track of.
Some transportation options have temporarily closed for maintenance. Disney has also introduced restrictions that affect how visitors can travel from Disney Springs to resort hotels.
Now another interruption is coming, and this one will affect Magic Kingdom during the heart of its fall season.
Disney has confirmed that a familiar transportation option inside the park will temporarily shut down later this month, removing both a way to get around and an attraction guests can enjoy.
Disney Has Put New Limits on Resort Transportation
One of the biggest transportation policy changes affects guests hoping to use Disney Springs as a starting point for visiting Disney Resort hotels.
Transportation from Disney Springs to those hotels is now limited to Disney Resort hotel guests and visitors with valid dining or experience reservations.
Guests taking a bus or water transportation from Disney Springs may be asked to show a valid room key, dining reservation, or experience reservation before boarding.
For visitors who previously used Disney transportation for casual resort hopping, that adds another requirement to consider. Guests without a resort stay or reservation don't have the same flexibility to use Disney Springs transportation to explore different hotels.
But policy changes aren't the only transportation developments visitors have encountered.
Disney's Boats Have Experienced Interruptions
Several water transportation options have also experienced temporary disruptions due to maintenance and refurbishment work.
In August, the FriendShip Boat dock serving Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort temporarily closed for maintenance. The work disrupted boat access for guests staying around those resorts.
Disney also suspended boat service along the Sassagoula River Cruise route from July 20 through late August while refurbishment work took place. Guests at resorts along that route had to rely on other transportation to reach Disney Springs.
Those interruptions eventually ended, but another transportation refurbishment is approaching.
This time, guests won't have to leave Magic Kingdom to notice it.
Frontierland Construction Has Already Changed the Experience
The Walt Disney World Railroad has long served two purposes at Magic Kingdom.
It's an attraction guests can enjoy while taking a break from walking, and it also offers another way to get around the park.
Construction has already limited that second benefit.
As Disney transforms Frontierland for Piston Peak National Park, Frontierland Station remains unavailable. The railroad has continued operating, but guests can't use its normal route around Magic Kingdom.
Soon, they won't be able to ride at all.
The Walt Disney World Railroad will close for refurbishment beginning September 28. Disney currently plans to reopen the attraction on October 30.
That puts the railroad out of commission from September 28 through October 29, covering most of October.
Fall Guests Will Have One Less Attraction
Losing the railroad for a month would affect visitors during any season, but this closure falls right in the middle of Magic Kingdom's Halloween festivities.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is taking place on select nights, while regular daytime visitors are also spending their fall vacations inside the park.
For those guests, the railroad closure means one fewer attraction to experience.
Daytime visitors won't have access to the train during the refurbishment. Halloween party guests who enter Magic Kingdom early will also find it unavailable before the separately ticketed festivities begin.
And losing the railroad isn't only about reducing the attraction lineup.
Magic Kingdom involves plenty of walking. The railroad offers guests a place to sit, relax, and continue experiencing the park. That can become particularly valuable several hours into a long park day.
Frontierland Station's existing closure had already made the train less useful for getting around. The upcoming refurbishment removes the remaining experience altogether.
October 30 Should Bring Some Relief
Fortunately, Disney has announced a reopening date for guests.
If the current refurbishment schedule holds, the Walt Disney World Railroad will welcome visitors back on October 30. That puts its return just before Halloween and ahead of Disney World's transition into the holiday season.
Until then, visitors arriving between September 28 and October 29 will need to plan for one less way to give their feet a break.
The railroad isn't necessarily about reaching another part of Magic Kingdom as quickly as possible. Part of its appeal comes from combining a relaxing attraction with transportation around the park.
For guests visiting during the Halloween season, losing that combination for most of October could make an already long Magic Kingdom day feel just a little longer.
