Disney’s night skies are about to change again.
Fireworks are a nightly Disney tradition, closing out long days with music, color, and a spectacle visible from far beyond the hub. At some resorts, however, the nighttime entertainment calendar changes considerably with the seasons.
That has been especially obvious this summer, when two Disney parks went three months without their regular fireworks offering. The seasonal pause began in June, leaving guests without the show through the hottest stretch of the year.
Now, the countdown to its return is officially on — but the comeback comes with an unusual twist.
A Three-Month Fireworks Break Ends Next Week
Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will bring back Sky Full of Colors on September 15, ending a hiatus that began after its June 15 performances.
The five-minute fireworks show is presented across both parks, using a selection of Disney music as colorful pyrotechnics fill the sky. Its return marks the first time in three months that Tokyo Disney Resort will stage its standard fireworks spectacular.
Long summer breaks are not unusual for fireworks at Tokyo Disney Resort. The resort routinely removes the show from its schedule during the warmer months, although operator The Oriental Land Company has not publicly given a specific reason for the seasonal hiatus.
This year’s absence has nevertheless been lengthy. Sky Full of Colors has remained off the calendar throughout the summer, even as both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea continued running other evening entertainment.
Guests waiting for its comeback will only have one opportunity to catch it.
Sky Full of Colors is scheduled for 8:50 p.m. on September 15 at both parks. After that single performance, the show disappears from the schedule again on September 16.
Unlike the summer shutdown, however, this second disappearance will not leave the resort without fireworks.
Night High Halloween begins September 16 as part of Disney Halloween, which runs through October 31 at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. The seasonal spectacular replaces Sky Full of Colors with a Halloween-focused fireworks presentation set to themed music.
That makes September 15 an unusually narrow window for the resort’s standard fireworks show: one night separating a three-month summer hiatus from the start of its Halloween replacement.
For guests visiting later in September or October, fireworks will continue. They will simply be watching a different production.
One Nighttime Show Is Leaving for Good
The fireworks change is only part of a larger nighttime shake-up unfolding at Tokyo Disneyland.
One day before Sky Full of Colors returns, Reach for the Stars will take its final bow at Cinderella Castle. The projection spectacular is scheduled to end permanently on September 14, almost exactly two years after debuting in September 2024.
Disney describes Reach for the Stars as “a nighttime spectacular presented at Cinderella Castle that brings beloved characters to life as they reach for the stars in pursuit of their dreams.”
Its final weeks have looked different from the show guests first saw in 2024.
Since July 2, Disney has presented an expanded farewell edition titled Reach for the Stars: Everlasting Dreams. The limited-time version adds an epilogue after the main show, brings back characters from the production, and includes music created specifically for the farewell period.
The biggest addition is above the castle. Everlasting Dreams also incorporates a drone display, a first for Tokyo Disneyland, as part of the production’s final sequence.
Reach for the Stars mixes projection mapping, lighting, lasers, pyrotechnics, and other effects across Cinderella Castle. It also marked a notable milestone for Tokyo Disneyland by bringing Marvel characters into one of the park’s nighttime spectaculars.
Its reception, however, has not always matched its technical ambition. Some Tokyo Disney Resort regulars criticized the production for leaning heavily on movie footage and familiar character moments rather than building a stronger original narrative around the castle.
Disney is now giving the show a much more elaborate sendoff than a quiet removal from the entertainment calendar.
The timing means Tokyo Disneyland’s nighttime lineup will change almost overnight. Reach for the Stars ends September 14. Sky Full of Colors returns September 15. Then Night High Halloween begins September 16.
