Disney finally gave fans a much closer look at Villains Land during D23 2026, answering several major questions about what could become one of Magic Kingdom’s biggest additions ever.
There’s just one answer Disney continues to avoid.
When does Villains Land actually open?
Disney hasn’t announced an opening year, much less an exact date. Based on the scale of the project and everything else happening around Magic Kingdom, however, we can start putting together a reasonable window.
And guests waiting for the villains to take over may need some patience.
Villains Land Is Taking Shape
Villains Land was originally announced at D23 2024, but Disney revealed considerably more about the project this year.
The expansion will tell an original story centered around a corrupted Wishing Well. Dark magic has spread through the surrounding forest, attracting Disney Villains who want its remaining power.
Disney also confirmed two major attractions.
One will be a coaster built around Maleficent and her mountaintop fortress. The other will be a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror, transporting guests into the Mirror Realm for encounters with numerous villains.
Restaurants and shopping will round out an expansion Disney has compared in scale to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
That size helps explain why Villains Land may still be several years away.
When Could Villains Land Open?
If we had to make a more specific prediction, late 2029 or 2030 would be the years to watch.
Part of that comes down to another enormous Magic Kingdom project.
Piston Peak National Park is already transforming the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area. We currently expect that expansion to open around 2028.
If that timeline holds, Disney could open Piston Peak first and follow it with Villains Land roughly one or two years later.
That would give Magic Kingdom two major additions across a relatively short period.
2030 Could Be Magic Kingdom’s Big Year
Disney’s decision not to announce an opening year at D23 is worth remembering. Villains Land is clearly well into development, but Disney isn’t ready to publicly commit to a construction schedule.
That makes 2030 particularly interesting.
A 2029 opening could happen if work progresses quickly, while 2031 remains possible if the massive project requires additional time.
For now, though, 2030 may be the safest prediction.
