Marvel is bringing some of its biggest survivors back together.
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) will reunite characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe while also pulling heroes from other corners of the wider Marvel Multiverse into the same story.
Among them is Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, whose return carries more weight than most.
When audiences last saw Loki in the Season 2 finale of his Disney+ series, he had taken control of the branching timelines and positioned himself at the center of the Multiverse.
That ending seemingly gave Loki a new purpose after years spent moving between villain, reluctant ally, and hero.
It also appeared to give Hiddleston’s character a relatively definitive ending – but Marvel had other plans. Hiddleston was subsequently confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, placing Loki back in the middle of an MCU story built heavily around the Multiverse.
Now, comments from the actor have renewed questions about whether his latest Marvel comeback could also lead to another death.
Tom Hiddleston Stops Short of Revealing Loki's Fate
Hiddleston addressed Loki’s history of dying during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.
The conversation also included Patrick Stewart, whose Professor Charles Xavier has died more than once across different Marvel timelines.
Stewart will return as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, alongside several other actors from the Fox X-Men films.
Loki has an equally complicated history with death.
The character appeared to die at the end of Thor (2011), only to return in The Avengers (2012).
Marvel repeated the fakeout in Thor: The Dark World (2013), before Thanos (Josh Brolin) seemingly killed Loki for good during the opening sequence of Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
A 2012 variant later escaped with the Tesseract during Avengers: Endgame (2019), creating the version followed throughout Loki.
While discussing those deaths, Hiddleston suddenly stopped himself from continuing.
“Look, if I keep going down the path of the end of this sentence, I will find myself revealing things that… I’m not, I’m going to stop. I have to stop.”
His response does not confirm that Loki dies in Avengers: Doomsday.
However, Hiddleston’s decision to cut himself off has inevitably sparked fresh speculation about what Marvel has planned for the character.
He also highlighted just how important Loki has become to Marvel’s wider Multiverse.
“Well, come on. I'm holding the timelines together. We live in a Multiverse now, I think. And Loki is the God of Stories. So, there it is.”
Loki Could Be Central to ‘Avengers: Doomsday'
Loki’s current role leaves him directly connected to the central conflict expected to drive Avengers: Doomsday.
Disney has described the upcoming film as bringing heroes from three different universes onto a “deadly collision course” as they face an existential threat.
Robert Downey Jr. will return to Marvel in a new role as Victor von Doom.
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor – AKA Loki's adopted brother – while Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Letitia Wright, and Simu Liu are also part of the enormous cast.
The movie will also bring back several veteran X-Men stars before Marvel introduces its new mutants, unveiled at D23, in a future project.
Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X, Ian McKellen reprises his role as Erik Lehnsherr, and James Marsden will once again play Scott Summers.
Chris Evans is also confirmed to appear as Steve Rogers for the first time since Avengers: Endgame – a move not all fans think is for the best, considering how his story wrapped in the latter.
Marvel has not revealed how Loki becomes involved in the conflict, nor whether he will leave his position at the center of the timelines.
Hiddleston has previously said that he once believed the ending of Loki Season 2 could mark the end of his time playing the character.
His return in Doomsday has already proven that it was not the case. Whether Loki makes it through another Avengers movie is another question entirely — and one Hiddleston apparently knows better than to answer.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
