Disney Gives Surprise Look at ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Land Ahead of 2027 Hollywood Studios Debut

Disney just gave Monsters, Inc. (2001) fans another reason to get excited about what is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Monstropolis is already shaping up to become one of the park’s biggest additions, with Disney planning an entire area inspired by Mike, Sulley, and the monster-filled city fans first met more than two decades ago. While Disney has revealed some of its biggest plans, many of the smaller pieces have remained a mystery.

Now, fans are getting a much closer look.

A new preview reveals several details Disney hasn't shown before, giving fans a better idea of just how much personality could be packed into Monstropolis when parts of the land begin welcoming guests in 2027.

And some of the most interesting additions aren't the massive attractions.

Disney Reveals More of the Glob Theater

The Glob Theater has already been announced for Monstropolis, but the latest concept art provides a much closer look at what Disney has planned.

Outside, a massive marquee immediately establishes the setting. “Welcome to Monstropolis” appears prominently above the entrance, while another message promises “A Scarefree Theatrical Extravaganza.”

Movie posters featuring Mike Wazowski and Sulley also appear outside, giving the building the familiar appearance of an old-fashioned theater while adding the monster humor fans would expect.

That combination makes sense for a land based on Monsters, Inc. (2001). The movie frequently turned everyday ideas into jokes built around monster life, and Disney appears to be taking a similar approach with the physical environment.

But the exterior only tells part of the story.

Monster Details Fill the Theater

The interior concept art offers another look at how far Disney could take that theme.

Large chandeliers hang overhead with giant monster eyes incorporated into their designs. Movie posters also continue inside, including monster-themed versions of recognizable titles. One example shown is “Silence of the Cribs.”

The artwork also appears to show a concession area.

Disney has not said whether guests will actually be able to purchase food or drinks there. It could instead serve as another themed detail meant to sell the illusion of a functioning theater.

If Disney uses this area as a waiting space or preshow, those smaller touches could give guests plenty to look at before moving farther into the experience.

Either way, the concept art suggests the Glob Theater will have plenty of personality.

Laugh Power Could Have a Bigger Presence

The theater isn't the only part of Monstropolis receiving new attention.

Disney has also provided a closer look at the familiar laugh canisters associated with the world of Monsters, Inc. (2001). The design closely resembles what fans know from the movie, although the version shown by Disney appears to have an additional feature near the bottom.

It looks similar to a microphone.

That would fit naturally with the story behind the new land. By the end of Monsters, Inc. (2001), laughter has become the new source of power for Monstropolis.

We believe these canisters could appear around the land and help reinforce that story. They could potentially provide opportunities for environmental storytelling or interactive jokes, although Disney has not revealed exactly how it plans to use them.

For now, they provide another recognizable connection between the movie and the physical land.

Monstropolis Begins Opening in 2027

While these smaller details are new, Disney has already revealed some of the bigger experiences coming to the expansion.

At D23 in 2026, Disney announced that Monstropolis will begin a phased opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027. The Glob Theater will be among the parts welcoming guests first while work continues on the door-vault coaster.

That suspended coaster will eventually take riders into the door warehouse, recreating one of the most memorable settings from Monsters, Inc. (2001).

Disney also plans to bring Harryhausen’s to the land. The sushi restaurant appears in the movie, and Disney has confirmed that its memorable sushi chef will be part of the new experience.

Together, those additions show the scale of what Disney has planned.

Disney Is Filling Out Its Monster City

The door-vault coaster may eventually become one of Monstropolis' biggest draws, but Disney clearly isn't relying on one attraction to carry the entire land.

The Glob Theater, Harryhausen’s, laugh canisters, parody posters, monster chandeliers, and other details all contribute to the larger setting Disney is creating.

For fans who have spent years watching Mike and Sulley navigate Monstropolis in Monsters, Inc. (2001), the latest preview provides a closer look at how that world could translate into Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Parts of that world will finally begin welcoming guests in 2027.

Until then, Disney still has plenty left to reveal, and there may be more monster-sized surprises waiting behind those doors.
