When Disney updates its resort hotels in Walt Disney World or Disneyland, guests are accustomed to rolling, phased refurbishments. Construction crews typically close off single wings or individual floors while keeping the lobby, restaurants, and pools open to guests. It allows the resort to maintain operations while quietly refreshing its accommodations behind temporary dust walls.

However, Disney is taking a far more drastic approach at one of its major international destinations.
Starting October 12, 2026, the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel will close its doors in its entirety. The sweeping property-wide shutdown affects every guest room, dining location, and amenity inside the resort's flagship Victorian-themed hotel. To make the news even more surprising for international travelers, Disney has not announced an official reopening date.
A Total Shutdown for Comprehensive Enhancements
The Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel has stood as the resort’s premier accommodation since the theme park destination first opened in 2005. Modeled after iconic grand Disney properties like Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in Florida and the Disneyland Hotel in Paris, the hotel features elegant Victorian architecture, formal gardens, and signature waterfront dining.

In an official statement regarding the closure, Disney explained that the property is being taken offline for “comprehensive enhancements to elevate our facilities, services, and the overall guest experience.”
Beyond that statement, Disney has kept specific details strictly under wraps. The company has not revealed whether the project involves replacing soft goods, retheming rooms, updating infrastructure, or completely redesigning popular dining venues.
However, completely vacating a flagship hotel—rather than using a phased closure—indicates a project of substantial scope. Closing the entire building allows construction crews to work continuously without risking guest complaints regarding noise, dust, or unavailable amenities.
Work Began Earlier This Summer
While the total closure takes effect on October 12, preliminary construction at the property has been underway for several months.

Renovation work originally began on the hotel’s west side in June 2026. During that initial phase, the hotel remained open to guests, with active construction restricted to a daily window between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Disney issued advisory notices warning guests of potential noise or paint odors. At the same time, certain room types on the west side were removed from booking engines.
The timing of the full shutdown is strategically positioned. It comes just four months after Hong Kong Disneyland concluded its yearlong 20th-anniversary celebration on June 7, 2026. With peak anniversary crowds tapering off, Disney is using this post-celebration window to take its premier property offline for a major transformation.
Where Guests Can Stay During the Shutdown
For travelers planning a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland during the closure, the flagship hotel will be unavailable. However, Disney confirmed that its two neighboring resort hotels will remain fully operational throughout the refurbishment:

- Disney Explorers Lodge: An immersive, resort-style property celebrating exploration across tropical regions of Asia, Oceania, South America, and Africa.
- Disney’s Hollywood Hotel: A vibrant property paying tribute to the golden age of cinema with Art Deco architecture and family-friendly amenities.
Disney noted that both alternative hotels will “continue to offer the same high standard of Disney hospitality,” with room reservations remaining open through the official Hong Kong Disneyland website.
Looking Ahead
Disney has reassured fans that the closure is temporary, stating that it looks forward to welcoming guests back to “a newly enhanced Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel in the future.”

Until Disney officially lifts the curtain on its plans and sets a reopening date, theme park fans will be eagerly watching for building permits and concept art to see how the flagship property will evolve
