Universal Orlando Confirms 2027 Permanent Closure as Demolition Accelerates

Universal Orlando Resort is preparing to permanently close another longtime guest favorite, and construction crews are already making major changes around the location.

The resort has spent years replacing older attractions with new experiences, transforming portions of its theme parks to accommodate ambitious developments.

While those investments have introduced popular rides and themed environments, they have also resulted in the disappearance of several original attractions.

Now, another historic location is approaching its final year of operation.

Recent construction developments suggest Universal isn't waiting until that closure to begin transforming the surrounding property.

In fact, demolition has already reached portions of the familiar landscape, leaving guests with a limited opportunity to experience the location before it disappears.

Universal Confirms Permanent Closure for 2027

Mythos Restaurant at Universal Islands of Adventure is scheduled to close permanently in 2027, bringing an end to a dining experience that has operated since the park opened in 1999.

Located inside The Lost Continent, Mythos has long been recognized for its dramatic architecture, featuring towering rock formations, cavernous openings, and an elaborate mythology-inspired setting.

Unlike many traditional theme park restaurants, Mythos offers table-service dining inside an environment designed to feel like part of an ancient world.

Its distinctive appearance has helped make the restaurant a recognizable landmark for visitors traveling through this section of Islands of Adventure.

However, the restaurant's days are numbered.

Universal has confirmed the 2027 closure, although guests are still waiting for an exact final operating date.

And while the restaurant continues welcoming diners, construction activity around the building has already intensified.

Demolition Reaches Popular Restaurant Before Closure

New aerial photographs shared by bioreconstruct on October 31 show significant demolition along the waterfront behind Mythos Restaurant.

Crews have removed sections of the artificial pink rockwork near the restaurant's bridge, exposing concrete structures underneath.

Black protective coverings now surround portions of the dismantled exterior, while construction equipment operates nearby.

Workers are also preparing a retaining wall along the lagoon, with steel materials and other construction supplies positioned throughout the area.

Importantly, Mythos itself remains open.

Guests can still enjoy the restaurant, although portions of the surrounding waterfront have been affected by construction.

The demolition represents another visible sign that Universal is preparing to completely transform The Lost Continent.

Universal Has Already Removed Multiple Original Attractions

The upcoming Mythos closure follows the disappearance of several attractions that once defined The Lost Continent.

Poseidon's Fury permanently closed in May 2023, ending the elaborate walkthrough experience that combined mythology, special effects, and theatrical storytelling.

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad stunt show had already closed in 2018.

Both former attraction sites have since undergone demolition.

Recent aerial photographs show crews filling and grading the former Poseidon's Fury property, while the attraction's plaza and nearby Treasures of Poseidon gift shop have disappeared.

The land's transformation actually began much earlier, when Universal introduced The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade in 2010.

That expansion replaced a substantial portion of the original environment, including the conversion of Dueling Dragons into Dragon Challenge.

Now, another major transformation is underway.

More Changes Could Be Coming to Islands of Adventure

Universal is preparing additional infrastructure throughout the construction zone, including a service road near temporary First Aid facilities.

Several older structures remain standing near the former Sindbad theater site, but their future remains uncertain.

Additional demolition could eventually affect how guests access Hogsmeade, although Universal has not confirmed any new walkway restrictions.

Perhaps the biggest mystery is what will replace The Lost Continent.

Universal has confirmed plans to redevelop the area but has not officially announced the new attractions or theme.

For now, guests still have an opportunity to visit Mythos Restaurant before its permanent closure in 2027.

However, with demolition already advancing around the building, the surrounding landscape is changing well before the restaurant serves its final meal.

For visitors who have enjoyed Mythos since Islands of Adventure's earliest years, the upcoming closure represents more than losing another dining option.

It's the disappearance of another surviving piece of Universal Orlando's original theme park history.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
