Marvel Studios’ next crossover is still filling out its roster. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have confirmed that the full cast of Avengers: Doomsday (2026) has not yet been revealed. The film is already positioned as the studio’s largest team-up since Avengers: Endgame (2019). The update arrives alongside new details on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and growing questions over whether Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) can keep its December 2027 release date.

The Russo Brothers Say More Names Are Coming
Marvel unveiled a large Doomsday ensemble in March 2025, but the directors have made clear that the reveal was only part of the picture. In a Walt Disney press release, Anthony Russo said: “The pattern that you’re sensing is real. We have absolutely not announced the entire cast. There is more to come.”
The filmmakers did not name any additional performers. That leaves fans to speculate about who might join before the film’s December 2026 debut.
Is Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk Returning?
Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk) has become the most discussed candidate. He was absent from the original announcement, but additional footage tied to Avengers Endgame: Encore (2026) shows Banner coming face to face with Doctor Doom. The scene suggests a possible return, though it is not official casting confirmation. Banner’s comeback could also arrive later, in Secret Wars.
Fans also hope to see Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), but none of them have been confirmed.

The Confirmed Lineup Spans Every Era of the MCU
The size of the existing roster explains why every potential addition draws scrutiny.
The Avengers contingent, in part, includes:
- Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
- Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America)
- Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes)
- Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man)
- Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova)
- Simu Liu (Shang-Chi)
- Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther)
The Fantastic Four arrive in full:
- Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards)
- Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm)
- Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm)
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm)
The legacy X-Men cast includes:
- Patrick Stewart (Professor X)
- Ian McKellen (Magneto)
- James Marsden (Cyclops)
- Rebecca Romijn (Mystique)
- Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler)
- Kelsey Grammer (Beast)
- Channing Tatum (Gambit)
Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) round out the announced cast.

Downey Jr. Steps Into His Boldest Marvel Role
Downey Jr. anchored the Infinity Saga as Tony Stark. He now returns as Victor von Doom, one of Marvel Comics’ most formidable villains and a longtime Fantastic Four adversary. Doom will be the central threat that brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men veterans. The film itself will have to show how Marvel separates Doom from Stark, and whether the two characters are connected at all.
A Japanese Voice With Personal Significance
In a video message for Japanese audiences, Downey Jr. announced that Toshiyuki Morikawa will voice Doctor Doom in the Japanese-language release. Morikawa’s credits include:
- Sephiroth in Final Fantasy
- Griffith in Berserk
- Enel in One Piece
- Minato Namikaze in Naruto
That history with powerful antagonists makes him a natural fit for a headline villain.
The casting also honors Keiji Fujiwara. Fujiwara voiced Tony Stark in Japanese MCU releases for years before he died of cancer in April 2020, aged 55. Downey Jr. paid tribute to him in the message. Morikawa now succeeds Fujiwara as the Japanese voice of a Downey Jr. character. The announcement also confirmed that the film opens in Japanese theaters on Friday, December 18.

Secret Wars Faces a Tight Production Window
Avengers: Secret Wars is still scheduled for December 17, 2027. However, reports suggest filming may extend into early 2027. That would compress post-production on an effects-heavy ensemble film and has fueled talk of a delay to 2028. A delay would give Marvel more room, but it could disrupt the studio’s wider slate and the MCU’s move beyond the Multiverse Saga.
For now, those reports are unconfirmed, and the December 2027 date stands.
What Comes Next
Doomsday is expected to establish Doom as the saga’s defining threat. Secret Wars, drawing on the comics’ huge Multiversal conflict, is positioned to continue that story and could reshape MCU continuity. More casting reveals are officially on the way. Marvel’s next announcements should clarify both the final lineup and the schedule for the saga’s conclusion.
