Disney Brings Back Notorious Virtual Queue System, Christmas Guests Affected

A familiar Disney frustration is returning just in time for Christmas.

Virtual queues have become one of Disney's most controversial theme park systems. Previously used for major attractions such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and TRON Lightcycle / Run, they allow guests to reserve access without spending hours in a physical line.

However, the system has also faced criticism. Boarding groups can disappear within minutes, leaving guests unable to experience certain attractions despite having already paid for admission. Technical problems and unpredictable return times have only added to the complaints.

Disney has since moved away from virtual queues for several major rides at Walt Disney World Resort. Elsewhere, however, the company has expanded the system to character meet-and-greets, including some of its most popular seasonal experiences.

That's now affecting guests visiting Disney for Christmas 2026.

Disney Brings Back Virtual Queues for Christmas Characters

Disneyland Paris has confirmed that guests must use a virtual queue to meet Santa Claus and Jack Skellington during this year's Disney Enchanted Christmas celebration.

The event officially begins on November 7 and runs through January 6, 2027, bringing seasonal entertainment, decorations, and festive character encounters to both Disney parks.

Santa Claus has moved to a new location for 2026. Guests can now find him inside Disney Clothiers on Main Street, U.S.A., where Disney has created a Christmas workshop.

Previously, Santa greeted visitors in Discoveryland, near Videopolis. The new location has already received positive feedback from guests.

Santa will remain available until December 25. Meanwhile, Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), is greeting guests at Critter Coral in Frontierland.

Both characters required virtual reservations during Christmas 2025, so the return of the system isn't entirely unexpected.

However, guests hoping to meet either character cannot simply turn up and join a traditional standby line. Instead, they must secure a reservation through the Disneyland Paris mobile app or seek assistance from a cast member at the meet-and-greet location.

Reservations are free, but availability is limited.

Disney's Character Reservation System Expands Across the Parks

Disneyland Paris is no stranger to a virtual queue system for additional character experiences (which, considering how popular some experiences have proven at Disney World in the past – cough, Figment in 2023, cough – may not be a bad idea for other parks).

Today, guests also need reservations for experiences such as Meet Mickey Mouse, Princess Pavilion, and Rencontre Royale, where visitors can meet Anna and Elsa inside World of Frozen.

The rules are relatively strict. Guests can hold only one virtual queue reservation at a time, with a maximum of five bookings per day. Each experience can only be reserved once per day.

Reservations become available after guests enter the park and scan their admission tickets. Disney releases additional slots throughout the day, although availability is not guaranteed.

The restrictions arrive during an expanded Christmas celebration at Disneyland Paris.

For the first time, World of Frozen at Disney Adventure World is participating in the festivities, with Nordic-inspired decorations, artificial snowfall, and performances by the Arendelle carollers.

Disneyland Park is also bringing back Mickey's Dazzling Christmas Parade!, which runs twice daily, alongside the Magical Christmas Tree Lighting and the Let's Sing Christmas! musical show.

A new festive musical celebration featuring Minnie Mouse and Mrs. Claus is also joining the entertainment lineup near Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Unlike the restricted character encounters, these performances do not require virtual queue reservations. Guests can watch with regular park admission, although Disney offers paid reserved viewing for the Christmas parade.

Do you think more Disney parks should use virtual queues for character meet-and-greets?
