For generations of Disney and Pixar fans, Toy Story has always been about two characters.
Woody and Buzz Lightyear have served as the faces of the franchise since audiences first met them in Toy Story (1995). Through four films, countless shorts, merchandise lines, and theme park appearances, the cowboy and space ranger remained at the center of nearly every major story.
That is about to change.
Just days before Toy Story 5 (2026) arrives in theaters, Pixar has confirmed that Jessie will serve as the film's primary toy protagonist, marking the first time a theatrical Toy Story movie has shifted its focus away from Woody and Buzz.

The change represents one of the biggest creative decisions in franchise history.
A New Era Begins for Toy Story
Since her debut in Toy Story 2 (1999), Jessie has become one of Pixar's most beloved characters.
Her emotional backstory, energetic personality, and strong connection to Woody quickly made her a fan favorite. However, despite her popularity, she has always existed as part of the supporting cast.
That changes in Toy Story 5.
Director Andrew Stanton recently revealed that as Pixar developed the film's story, Jessie naturally emerged as the character best suited to carry the narrative. While Woody and Buzz remain important parts of the movie, Jessie ultimately became the emotional center of the story.
The decision wasn't driven by an effort to replace the franchise's iconic duo. Instead, it grew out of the themes and story ideas that developed during the creative process.
Why Jessie Made Sense
One reason Jessie rose to the forefront is because her story still contains unanswered questions.
Audiences learned about her heartbreaking relationship with Emily in Toy Story 2 (1999), but Pixar never fully explored what happened after those events.
That lingering mystery gave filmmakers an opportunity to revisit a character who still had room to grow.
At the same time, Toy Story 5 explores larger themes involving technology and modern childhood. The movie reportedly examines how digital devices increasingly compete with traditional toys for children's attention.
Those ideas naturally connected with Jessie's story and helped shape the direction of the film.
Rather than retelling another adventure centered on Woody's leadership or Buzz's identity, Pixar found a fresh perspective through Jessie.

Woody and Buzz Aren't Going Anywhere
While Jessie may be leading the film, fans shouldn't assume Woody and Buzz are being written out of the franchise.
Both characters remain key parts of Toy Story 5, and Pixar has made it clear that they still play important roles within the story.
However, this creative shift does signal something important.
After more than 30 years, Pixar appears willing to evolve the formula that made Toy Story successful in the first place.
That approach could help the franchise remain relevant for a new generation while still honoring the characters that longtime fans have grown up with.
A Major Change Ahead of Release
With Toy Story 5 (2026) arriving on June 19, audiences won't have to wait much longer to see whether the decision pays off.
The film was already one of Disney's biggest upcoming releases, but the confirmation that Jessie is stepping into the lead role gives fans another reason to pay attention.
For the first time in franchise history, Woody and Buzz are no longer carrying the story on their own.
Instead, Pixar is betting that Jessie's unfinished journey can guide Toy Story into its next chapter.
