A President’s Personal Item Suddenly Missing From Disney Attraction

Barack Obama’s basketball has disappeared from the Hall of Presidents lobby at Magic Kingdom, and Disney has not issued any official statement about its removal. The basketball, on loan from the Barack Obama Presidential Library, was displayed alongside a photo of Obama playing basketball and a plaque about his love for the sport. As of Wednesday, the basketball is completely gone.

Although the photo and plaque remain, the photo has been moved to the pedestal where the basketball once was, and a picture of President John F. Kennedy with Macaroni, the White House pony, now occupies the display cabinet space.

Where It Probably Went

The Obama Presidential Center is under construction in Chicago and is set to open this summer, raising questions about the recent disappearance of a basketball with Obama’s presidential seal from its display at Magic Kingdom. With the center planning to include a basketball court, it makes sense to return the basketball for permanent display.

Presidential libraries often reclaim items to control their context and narrative. While the basketball was accessible to millions at Magic Kingdom, the opening of the new center likely prompted its recall. Additionally, the timing is interesting, as Obama was recently in the spotlight for catching a basketball at the NBA All-Star Game, coinciding with the disappearance of the ball.

What the Disney Display Was About

The Hall of Presidents lobby features displays that show the personal lives of presidents. These displays aim to make presidents relatable by highlighting their hobbies and interests beyond politics.

For example, the basketball display for Obama is part of this effort. The basketball has the presidential seal and is on loan from the Barack Obama Presidential Library. This adds real significance, making it an actual artifact from Obama’s time in office, rather than just a regular basketball.

Obama’s passion for basketball is well-known. Throughout his presidency, he played pickup games, shared March Madness brackets, and often talked about basketball. Displaying his real basketball at Magic Kingdom helps guests connect with that side of his personality in a meaningful way.

Hall of Presidents Currently Open

The Hall of Presidents is currently operating normally with its full show after reopening June 29, 2025, following refurbishment to add President Donald Trump’s animatronic for his second term. The attraction closed on January 20, 2025, after Trump’s inauguration. It stayed closed for about five months while Disney Imagineering moved Trump’s figure and updated the show.

This kind of closure and update is completely standard for the Hall of Presidents. The attraction closes whenever a new president is sworn in. This is so Disney can add the new president’s animatronic and update the script and presentation. During Trump’s first term, the show closed in January 2017 and reopened that December. After Biden’s inauguration in 2021, it closed and reopened in August with his animatronic.

The lobby remained accessible throughout the closure period. Reopening in June 2025 to give guests access to the exhibits, artwork, and air-conditioned seating. The space provides a cool escape from Florida’s heat while showcasing presidential history, making it valuable beyond its educational content.

What You Can Still See at Disney

The Hall of Presidents is fully operational right now with all the presidents including Trump’s recently added animatronic. The lobby displays are accessible with exhibits, portraits, and artifacts minus the Obama basketball that just disappeared.

The photo of Obama playing basketball and the plaque describing his love of the sport are still on display. So there’s still some representation of that aspect of his presidency even without the actual physical basketball artifact. The Kennedy photo with Macaroni, the White House pony, fills the visual gap in the display case. This keeps the focus on personal aspects of presidential lives.

If you specifically wanted to see the Obama basketball, you’re out of luck at Magic Kingdom now. It’ll presumably be on display at the Obama Presidential Center when it opens in Chicago this summer. Disney hasn’t officially confirmed where the basketball went or why it was removed. It just disappeared, leaving guests wondering.
