Kim Delaney, a name synonymous with hard-hitting performances on hit shows like NYPD Blue, has long been a staple of the ABC family. With a career spanning several decades, Delaney’s portrayal of Detective Diane Russell earned her critical acclaim and a loyal following.
Yet, while her on-screen characters have resonated with audiences, her off-screen life has been marred by a series of personal and legal troubles that many hoped were behind her.
On March 31, 2025, reports emerged that Delaney and her husband, James Morgan, had been taken into custody following a violent altercation at their residence in Marina Del Rey.

According to police records, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a disturbance where an argument escalated into physical violence. This latest incident has raised questions about the pressures and personal battles that sometimes shadow even the most successful stars.
Delaney’s career with ABC dates back to 1995, when she first joined the cast of NYPD Blue. Over the years, she became known for her compelling performances and her ability to convey the deep emotional struggles of her characters.
Despite her impressive body of work—including memorable roles in All My Children, General Hospital, Army Wives, and Chicago Fire — Delaney’s off-screen life has been punctuated by recurring issues related to alcohol abuse.

The incident that led to the recent arrests reportedly stemmed from a heated argument between Delaney and Morgan, which quickly turned physical. In a revealing twist, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s response to the incident has now brought long-hidden personal struggles back into the spotlight.
After paramedics arrived at the scene to check on potential injuries, both Delaney and Morgan were taken into custody, per TMZ.
When reached for comment, the LASD directed PEOPLE to its Marina Del Rey Sheriff’s Station. Delaney was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, while Morgan was arrested for domestic violence, a spokesperson for the station confirmed. Morgan and Delaney were still in custody as of March 30, according to the station.
TMZ initially reported her charge as felony assault likely to cause great bodily injury, while Morgan was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.

This incident is not an isolated moment in Delaney’s troubled history. In 2002, Delaney was arrested in Malibu on charges of suspected drunk driving after allegedly refusing to take a breathalyzer test. That case ended with her pleading no contest, a fine, probation, and a requirement to complete a special driving course. Despite these legal issues, Delaney managed to continue her career, even checking herself into a treatment program less than a year later.
However, her challenges did not end there. In 2005, Delaney faced a personal crisis when she lost custody of her teenage son after an incident in which she forced him to ride in a car while she was driving under the influence — a revelation that added to the public’s growing concern about her well-being.

More recently, in 2024, she was embroiled in yet another controversy when a motorcyclist filed a lawsuit against her. The motorcyclist claimed that after Delaney crashed her car into his motorcycle in 2022, she attempted to pay him off to avoid police involvement, and when he refused, she fled the scene.
With her husband, Morgan, now also implicated in the latest incident, the couple’s legal troubles have taken center stage. Their next scheduled court date is set for April 1, 2025, as authorities continue to investigate the events that led to their arrest.
