Actor From ‘Stranger Things’ Faces Backlash After Picking Canada Over USA

An Olympic gold medal game between the United States and Canada already guarantees drama. Add a globally recognized TV star into the crowd, and the reaction becomes even louder.

That’s exactly what unfolded when Noah Schnapp was spotted supporting Canada during the 2026 Winter Olympics men’s hockey final. The actor, best known for his role in Stranger Things, attended the game wearing a Team Canada jersey while surrounded by Canadian fans.

The United States ultimately won the game 2–1 in overtime, capturing its first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since 1980. But as the celebration unfolded on the ice, another storyline took off online.

Social Media Reacts Fast

Clips of Schnapp cheering for Canada began circulating almost immediately. Comment sections filled with divided reactions.

Some viewers expressed disappointment, framing his choice as surprising given that he rose to fame in the United States. Others shrugged it off, noting that athletes and entertainers often have multicultural backgrounds.

The debate centered on identity.

Why This Sparked Controversy

Schnapp holds dual citizenship, meaning he has legal ties to both countries. But perception matters.

Because Schnapp became a household name through an American-produced series set in the U.S., some fans see him as strongly tied to American pop culture. For those viewers, his visible support of Canada during such a significant moment in U.S. sports history felt jarring.

The overtime finish only intensified emotions. After decades of waiting for another gold medal, American fans were in full celebration mode. Seeing a familiar face cheering for the opposing team added friction to an otherwise triumphant night.

A Moment That Will Likely Fade

As Olympic headlines move forward and the gold medal victory remains the defining memory of the night, this controversy may prove short-lived.

The U.S. team will be remembered for its dramatic overtime win. The players earned their place in history. Schnapp’s jersey choice, while headline-worthy in the moment, may soon fade into the background of the broader Olympic story.

Yet the reaction says something about the intersection of entertainment and national pride.

When global sporting events collide with celebrity culture, even a seat in the stands can become part of the narrative. And in this case, one actor’s choice to support Canada sparked a debate that extended far beyond the rink.

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy

I was born and raised in California, but I alway’s cheer for the Costa Rican National team whenever they play the USA!
If he has dual citizenship, then he’s free to cheer for either team!
