The Walt Disney Company found themselves in a no-win situation after Jonathan Majors was convicted of misdemeanor assault and harassment in a New York City courtroom. And somehow, Disney managed to make the situation worse for themselves.
After the conviction, Disney and Marvel fired Majors from the MCU. He played Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and was set to be the main villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next phase.

But then, after cutting ties with Majors, Disney-owned ABC invited him onto Good Morning America for an “emotional” interview. Both Majors’ fans and detractors called out Disney for the hypocrisy of filing him and then allowing him the platform to explain himself.
Now, Disney and Majors find themselves being criticized by the daughter of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr., Bernice King. During the trial, Majors invoked Coretta Scott King’s name once, and in his ABC interview, he said that his new partner, Meagan Good, “held him down like Coretta Scott King.”
During the trial, Majors was heard on a recording played by the prosecution telling his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, that he was a “great man” and she should “be more like Michelle Obama and Coretta Scott King.”
My mother wasn’t a prop.
She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War.
Please understand…my mama was a force.

It was these comments that Bernice King took exception to. King took to social media to denounce the use of her mother’s name, saying, “My mother wasn’t a prop.” She did not mention Jonathan Majors or his comments at any point.
Bernice King wrote:
She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.
During the Good Morning American interview, Linsey Davis of ABC News Live asked Majors why he continually invoked the name of Martin Luther King Jr’s wife. He responded with:Â
It was me trying to give an analogy of what it is I’m aspiring to be. These great men, Martin, President Obama. I need her, in that case, Grace Jabbari, to make the same sacrifices I am making.
Jonathan Majors faces up to one year in prison for his conviction on two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault. He has said that he plans on appealing the conviction. He is set to be sentenced on February 6.
Disney and Marvel have not yet said who will replace the Creed iii (2023) actor in the MCU, but with a change in its film lineup, Disney only has one Marvel film scheduled to be released in 2024. This will give writers time to develop a new storyline to replace actor Jonathan Majors.
