Frontierland continues to change shape as construction around Big Thunder Mountain Railroad squeezes the original Magic Kingdom Park walkways even tighter. Guests passing through the land this week found new barriers, expanded work zones, and a noticeably smaller footprint in an already busy part of the original Walt Disney World Resort theme park.
Big Thunder Mountain Area Tightens as Construction Expands

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has remained closed since January 6, 2025, as Walt Disney Imagineers complete a major overhaul ahead of its spring 2026 reopening. The lengthy project includes a full track replacement, an updated opening sequence featuring Rainbow Caverns, and visual enhancements described by Disney as “new magic.” As work progresses behind the walls, the construction perimeter has grown outward into Frontierland once again.
NEW: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom will reopen in spring 2026 after a year-long refurbishment that included full track replacement, updates to The Rainbow Caverns, and what Disney calls “new magic.” No exact date has been announced.

Crews recently extended the construction walls surrounding the attraction’s entrance. These walls now extend to the Frontierland train station, which remains closed due to the ongoing construction of the Disney Villains land and Piston Peak National Park at the Magic Kingdom.
Imagineers Continue Ride Testing

Despite the expanded work zone, signs of progress are visible. In the months leading up to Wednesday’s announcement about the spring 2026 reopening, Disney Park guests spotted Imagineers conducting slow-speed tests on the new coaster track. Repainted mine cars appeared on the rails in October and November, and on December 3, WDWNT captured footage of an empty train climbing one of the attraction’s hills. The vehicle was not moving at full speed, and ride dummies have not been used in testing phases yet, but each run signals ongoing momentum toward the final stages of the refurbishment.
Frontierland Walkways Grow More Crowded

With walls and temporary barricades surrounding the entire area, the paths near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad feel much narrower than before. Guests can no longer see into the former Rivers of America or Tom Sawyer Island due to view-blocking panels that have been installed as part of the construction of Piston Peak National Park. However, Walt Disney World Resort has placed picnic tables and benches nearby.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2026. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced a grand-opening date for Piston Peak National Park or the Disney Villains land at Magic Kingdom Park.
