Results of Disney CEO Bob Iger’s Big Risk Have Been Confirmed

A major decision made during one of Disney’s most turbulent leadership periods has now turned into a landmark win for the company, thanks to the early performance of 2025's Zootopia 2.

In late 2022, Disney removed CEO Bob Chapek after months of internal tension, inconsistent box office turnout, and lingering complications from the pandemic. His predecessor, Bob Iger, returned to the post—reclaiming the role he held from 2005 to 2020 after succeeding Michael Eisner. Soon after stepping back in, Iger revealed that three animated sequels had entered development: Frozen 3, Toy Story 5, and Zootopia 2.

With Frozen 3 set for 2027 (and Frozen 4 also on the board) and Toy Story 5 aiming for next summer, Zootopia 2 became the first of the three to reach theaters. Its Thanksgiving debut has already shown that bringing the franchise back was a strategic masterstroke.

The original Zootopia premiered in 2016 to critical and financial success, mixing comedy, mystery, and character-driven storytelling on its way to more than $1 billion at the global box office. Its impact continued through the Disney+ anthology series Zootopia+, helping keep the brand alive while fans waited for news of a sequel.

Zootopia 2 follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on a new mystery surrounding a reptilian villain who threatens the peace of their city. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return, joined by Ke Huy Quan as Gary De'Snake.

The sequel staged a strong start with $10.2 million in Tuesday previews—the second highest in Disney Animation history after Moana 2’s $13.8 million. Industry expectations for the five-day Thanksgiving frame fell between $130 million and $160 million domestically, with the film earning $39.5 million on its official opening day. International ranges initially projected $135 million to $145 million, powered in part by a $33.7 million opening day in China that ranked as the 10th-largest U.S. debut in the market. Critics responded well, awarding the film a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score.

After its first weekend, the film’s full momentum became clear.

Zootopia 2 generated $156 million domestically over the five-day holiday period and an impressive $400 million internationally. The global opening totaled $556 million—the biggest worldwide debut for an animated film and the fourth-largest opening for any Hollywood title to date. Its three-day domestic total reached $96.8 million, placing it behind only Moana 2’s Thanksgiving performance in 2024.

China delivered extraordinary numbers, with a $272 million start. That figure ranks as the strongest animated opening in the country and the second-largest debut overall behind 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

The sequel also secured several additional milestones: the highest global sequel opening since 2021, the biggest worldwide debut of 2025 so far, the strongest opening for an animated sequel ever, and the highest global launch for a Disney animated feature.

Moviegoers are enthusiastically embracing it, giving the film an A CinemaScore and a 95% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. Considering that the original Zootopia opened with $75 million domestically in 2016 and eventually earned $1.025 billion worldwide, the sequel seems poised to follow that path or potentially surpass it.

“The incredible response to Zootopia 2 reflects both its worldwide appeal and the remarkable work of our filmmakers and cast,” said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman, via The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us.”

Iger’s decision to revive the series wasn’t the only surprise—he joined the film himself. Zootopia 2 includes a cameo where he voices Bob Tiger, a weatherman delivering a short forecast. Though Iger has appeared in nonfiction programming before, this is his first animated voice role.

The cameo connects directly to his early professional life. Before climbing the ranks within ABC and eventually Disney, Iger worked as a TV weatherman in Ithaca, New York, and revisited that job in 2021 during a live segment at KABC. Director Jared Bush has said Iger had long wanted to voice an animated character, making this moment a fitting addition as he approaches the end of his contract in 2026.

The role adds a personal flourish to a franchise that has now reached new worldwide heights.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
