The past week has been anything but smooth for The Walt Disney Company. The entertainment giant faced mounting criticism after suddenly suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live! following comments the host made about Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump. The fallout was swift, sparking heated reactions from Hollywood, political figures, and fans alike.
The move to take the show off the air was reportedly influenced by two of Disney’s largest affiliates, NexStar Media and Sinclair Broadcasting, who refused to air the program in light of Kimmel’s remarks.

Reactions to the suspension poured in almost immediately. The Producers Guild, Writers Guild, and Screen Actors Guild all condemned Disney’s decision. Well-known names, including former President Barack Obama and former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, also spoke out, insisting the company had made the wrong call.
Behind the scenes, negotiations quickly began. Reports say Kimmel’s legal team met with Disney to discuss how the show could return. One major obstacle stemmed from Sinclair Broadcasting, which laid out a series of demands for Kimmel, including issuing an apology for his words.
However, Kimmel made it clear to Disney that he would not apologize, claiming his comments were being “mischaracterized.”

After several days of tense discussion, progress was made. According to Deadline, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will officially return to the late-night lineup on Tuesday, September 23.
In response, Disney released a statement addressing the timing of the decision:
A spokesman said, “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
What remains unclear is whether Kimmel agreed to meet any of Sinclair’s demands before the show’s reinstatement.

NexStar and Sinclair weren’t alone in targeting Disney and Jimmy Kimmel after the comedian’s remarks drew backlash. FCC Chair Brendan Carr joined the fray, appearing on a podcast after the episode aired. There, he warned that Disney had a choice to make — “the easy way or the hard way” — and urged affiliate broadcasters like NexStar and Sinclair to drop Jimmy Kimmel Live! or risk facing FCC consequences themselves.
Even after Disney appeared to respond in line with Carr’s not-so-subtle warning, he kept the pressure on. On a separate podcast, Carr suggested that the FCC might investigate The View for potential violations of the Equal Opportunity Rule, signaling that Disney remained firmly in his crosshairs.
