The Hellmouth is stirring once again, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, returning as Buffy Summers in Hulu’s upcoming revival, wants to reunite fans with familiar faces.
Speaking with Vanity Fair Italia, Gellar, 48, recently shared that reviving the beloved characters, including those who perished in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series (1997- 2003), is a top priority for her and the production team.
And knowing Buffy, death has never been the final word.
“It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original,” she said. “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”
Will the Show Use the Buffy Multiverse?
Buffy’s story has always been supernatural. As such, methods like witchcraft, time travel, the afterlife, and perhaps even the Buffyverse Multiverse (every franchise has one) could provide creative gateways to bring back characters who had been killed off by end of the original series, such as Tara Maclay (Amber Benson) and Emma Caulfield (Anya Jenkins).

Given that the Multiverse hype continues to be trendy in pop culture (namely across the superhero genre in television and film, whether Marvel or DC), it feels like a natural fit to explore those story avenues and offer longtime Buffy fans some thrilling surprises.
With Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) stepping into Buffy’s shoes as the new slayer and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) directing the pilot, it’s clear the revival isn’t just re-treading old ground—it’s aiming to build a rich, expansive Buffyverse where no character is truly gone forever. What spells and mysteries await? We’ll find out soon.
