Canadians Abide Government Warnings, Cancel Disney Vacations

A political and economic firestorm is causing some Canadian Disney Parks fans to rethink their planned vacations. As tensions escalate between Canada and the United States, some travelers are opting to stay closer to home instead of visiting Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort.

Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged citizens to prioritize domestic spending instead of funneling money into the United States economy. His statement followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed commitment to imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, a move that could severely impact Canadian businesses and families.

In a press conference, Trudeau suggested that Canadians reconsider their spending habits, emphasizing the importance of supporting local industries.

“Choose Canada,” he said. “It might mean checking the labels at the supermarket and picking Canadian-made products. It might mean opting for Canadian Rye over Kentucky Bourbon or forgoing Florida orange juice altogether. It might mean changing your summer vacation plans to stay here in Canada and explore the many national and provincial parks, historical sites, and tourist destinations our great country has to offer.”

His remarks immediately sparked heated discussions online, with some Disney Parks fans reconsidering their U.S. travel plans to protest the tariffs. This week, President Donald Trump announced that the tariffs are “going forward,” renewing discussion about canceled vacations.

Canadians Cancel Disney Vacations Over U.S. Tensions

In recent days, some Canadian Disney Parks fans have taken to Reddit to discuss how they’re responding to the economic and political climate, with some outright canceling their trips to Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

“We canceled our 2-week trip – no way do we feel safe and no way are we supporting the horrible policies of the country,” said u/ninjasonganddance.

We cancelled our two week trip in March and are going to Mexico for a week and then the other week planning a staycation here in Canada,” u/elloittclan replied.

For some, the decision is not just about political frustrations but also the financial strain of international travel. The weakened Canadian dollar has made a Disney vacation more expensive than ever, further discouraging trips to the U.S.

“We have been considering a trip to California for December, and even though they’re a blue state, it doesn’t feel right to give money to the US with everything that’s happening (the crappy dollar, threats of 51st state, tariffs, mango mussolini…),” said u/Certain_Hippo_3046. “Considering going back to Japan instead, since the dollar and yen are pretty par.”

Other Canadians have wholly abandoned their U.S. travel plans.

“We had plans for September. Fly to San Diego, stay near Balboa Park, see the San Diego Zoo. Then we were going to take the Surfliner to Anaheim, stay for 5 days, and visit Disneyland Parks for 3 days,” u/travlynme2 explained. “We are not going now. Maybe, never. Hopefully in four years. I am sad this was my bucket list.”

“We’ve cancelled our two-week trip for later this year,” said u/NickDynmo. “We’ll be back in four years. It breaks my heart to do so; I really wanted to see Epic Universe. Saving up for a Paris trip next year.”

Some Canadians Still Plan Disney Park Vacations

Despite the wave of cancellations, not everyone is ready to ditch their Disney vacations. Some Disney Parks fans insist that politics and economic concerns won’t keep them from the magic.

“No, I love WDW,” said u/Msfreedom1. “Nothing going to make me disappoint my kids who I promised to take them this year.”

Other users agreed, saying that their plans remain unchanged.

“Most are still going,” u/infinityandbeyond75 wrote. “…Many are saying it doesn’t affect them directly so their plans are to still go…You just need to decide how you personally handle it. Some say a Disney trip is more worth it to them and some will cancel. Personal preference for everyone.”
