Marvel Studios is laying the groundwork for its next major crossover, and the road to Avengers: Doomsday has already been anything but straightforward.
The upcoming film is scheduled for a December 2026 release and will serve as the fifth Avengers movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the project audiences will eventually see that it looks very different from the one originally announced.

When Marvel first revealed its Multiverse Saga roadmap, the film carried the title Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The storyline was designed to focus on Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors.
Following the studio’s decision to move away from that storyline, Marvel reworked the project entirely. The Kang-centered plot was scrapped, the title was shortened, and the film’s focus shifted to one of Marvel’s most iconic villains: Doctor Doom.
The change was revealed during San Diego Comic-Con in 2024 with an unexpected casting announcement. Robert Downey Jr., the actor synonymous with Tony Stark, will return to the MCU not as Iron Man but as Victor Von Doom.

Downey helped launch the MCU with Iron Man in 2008, making his return especially notable. Marvel has not confirmed whether Doom will have any Multiverse ties to Stark or if the character will exist as a completely separate figure.
The scope of the film appears to mirror Marvel’s previous ensemble blockbusters. Avengers: Doomsday is expected to unite characters from across the MCU while also incorporating figures from the X-Men universe that once belonged to 20th Century Studios.
Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed both Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), have returned to guide the project. The brothers are also set to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, currently scheduled to arrive in December 2027.

Although Marvel has released little official story information, speculation about the plot has begun circulating online.
One popular theory connects Doctor Doom’s motivations to the ending of Avengers: Endgame. In that film, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) traveled back in time to return the Infinity Stones but ultimately chose to remain in the past with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
Some fans believe that decision may have altered the timeline in a way that destroyed Doom’s universe, potentially creating a personal rivalry between the two characters. Casting announcements have only increased interest in the project. Chris Hemsworth is expected to return as Thor, while Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier.

New arrivals will also play key roles, including Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm from the Fantastic Four. A 2025 livestream confirming multiple cast members sparked major online discussion and reinforced the idea that Doomsday could become one of Marvel’s largest crossover productions.
Meanwhile, Marvel Comics is preparing its own large-scale Avengers storyline.
The publisher’s upcoming event “Avengers: Armageddon” will begin in June 2026 and unfold across a five-issue series. The comic is written by Chip Zdarsky with artwork by Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz. The storyline expands on developments from the “One World Under Doom” arc as well as Zdarsky’s Captain America run, building them into a wider narrative centered on Latveria.

In the story, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross—better known as Red Hulk—seizes control of the nation of Latveria. His takeover triggers global turmoil and forces the Avengers into action. The situation escalates quickly, drawing in additional heroes, including the Fantastic Four and Wolverine, as the conflict grows.
Marvel’s official synopsis reads:
“ARMAGEDDON HAS ARRIVED!
Red Hulk’s devastating tear across the globe must be stopped…but it will take a colossal gathering of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to do it! Calling in the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine and more…but who will survive this super-powered cataclysm?! There will be a pre-Armageddon Marvel Universe and a post-Armageddon Marvel Universe. Be here to bear witness to the transformation.”

That mention of two distinct eras suggests the storyline could reshape the Marvel Universe in significant ways. The publisher has also indicated the event will intersect with the Multiverse developments tied to the Ultimate Universe.
Despite the scale, Zdarsky explained that he did not initially view the story as a typical Marvel crossover. “I don’t really consider it an event… I just wrote a story that I thought was big and cool and interesting… And then Marvel’s like, ‘Oh, wow. This is a cool event.’… so it feels like a big thing,” he said (via Comic Book Movie).
“Avengers: Armageddon #1” will be released on June 3, 2026, with a cover illustrated by Dike Ruan. The comic will debut just months before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters. And just who is in the main Avengers team?

Captain America (Sam Wilson)
Sam Wilson’s version of Captain America enters the story, known for bold strategic decisions. During the “One World Under Doom” storyline, he even partnered with villains in an effort to expose Doctor Doom.
Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson took up the Captain America mantle after Avengers: Endgame and most recently appeared in Captain America: Brave New World (2025), where he confronted both the Leader (Tim Blake Nelson) and Red Hulk (Harrison Ford).
Wolverine
Logan joins the Avengers lineup, representing the mutant side of Marvel’s world. Known for his fierce combat style and healing factor, Wolverine’s role in the storyline connects directly to the prelude comic “Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon,” which introduces a mysterious new mutant tied to the Weapon X program.
Hugh Jackman recently reprised the role alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), bringing the character into Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe through Multiverse storytelling.

Spider-Man
Spider-Man also plays a major role in the “Armageddon” storyline. In the comics, Peter Parker helps repair the Avengers’ public image following Doom’s fall. Tom Holland last portrayed the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The hero will return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).
Vision
Vision returns to the Avengers roster in the “Armageddon” storyline, bringing abilities such as density control and energy projection. His complicated history across different factions adds an interesting dynamic to the team.
The character last played a major role on screen in WandaVision, which introduced the rebuilt White Vision. His story will continue in the upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest.

Iron Man
Tony Stark remains central to the Avengers’ efforts to rebuild trust with the public after the chaos of “One World Under Doom.” In “Avengers: Armageddon,” Stark once again leads the fight against Red Hulk’s destructive campaign.
Although Stark died in Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday as Doctor Doom.
Invisible Woman
Sue Storm brings the Fantastic Four into the “Armageddon” storyline, joining the Avengers on the battlefield while Reed Richards focuses on strategic planning. Vanessa Kirby debuted as the character in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), introducing Marvel’s First Family to the MCU ahead of future crossovers.
Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers serves as one of the Avengers’ strongest allies during the Armageddon storyline. Her cosmic powers and experience make her a major asset against Red Hulk’s escalating attacks. Brie Larson last appeared as the character in The Marvels (2023), alongside Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan.
With “Avengers: Armageddon” set to launch in June 2026 and Avengers: Doomsday arriving that December, Marvel’s comic and film divisions appear poised to explore parallel storylines as the franchise builds toward its next phase.
