On Saturday, January 15, 2022, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Covid protocols expired with no word of further extension.

The CDC’s Framework for Conditional Sailing Order that regulated how Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and the rest of the cruise industry operated in and out of U.S. waters was last extended in October 2021. According to USA Today, the CDC confirmed that the Order will devolve to optional guidelines going forward.

The update comes on the heels of several stories of cruise lines taking their own supplementary measures in reaction to the enduring reported infection rate of the omicron variant. Disney Fanatic covered one such example earlier this week in which Disney Cruise Line began requiring full vaccination for all would-be passengers as young as five years old. The CDC released in a statement that it “is transitioning to a voluntary COVID-19 risk mitigation program.”

“Cruise ships operating in U.S. waters choosing to participate in the program on a voluntary basis agree to follow all recommendations and guidance issued by CDC as part of this program,” the statement also said. The agency further elaborated to say that all vessels operating in U.S. waters with international itineraries will be classified as “gray” color status, which signals that they have not reviewed the ship’s health and safety protocols. It should also be mentioned that the CDC released a travel advisory for cruise lines back in December.

The last month of 2021 also saw Disney and other cruise lines undergo a further investigation by the CDC after COVID-19 cases were reported onboard have been reported, despite all Guests and crew members receiving full vaccination. Click the link below for more on that story.
